The Gathering compo fuckup
category: parties [glöplog]
Is anyone from the TG compo team willing to explain why our invite intro was placed in a video compo with some random gamer entries, thereby making sure noone in the know saw it and virtually forcing the prod directly into oblivion? We tried to support your event by means of release, but got burned- maybe we should forget about TG altogether and focus on serious demoparties entirely from now on?
Oh, and don't give me any shit along the lines of "you handed in a video file, so we put it in the video compo"- If you actually look at the video, you'll notice the intro runs on an industrial pipe bending machine, so there's no fucking way we could have brought original hardware to the event.

Rowley Birkin: Maybe because the readme-file says "For The Gathering 2011 'Freestyle Video' competition."?
ouch.
kusma: That was written a few hours before the compo deadline, presumably after being informed of the compo it would participate in. Furthermore, the executable version was included to prove it's not a faked video-only thing- this might have been a useful hint for the compo team as well.
would have been helpful to contact the orgas in your case then if you really wrote the nfo knowing it would go there.
Rowley Birkin: It sounds to me like you're making wild guesses and calling them presumptions here.
But even if you're right: Considering that it's a PC bootblock intro with a pompous presentation, I'm not surprised if they were told that they had to deliver it as a wild to get it shown in that way.
...and even if it somehow did use special pipe bending machine features: The PC compo rules say "Note that we will still need to see that your demo actually runs on its platform even if we will use a video during the compo show".
So yeah, it sounds to me like it was a clear-cut decision.

...That isn't to say that I think your party deserves more attention; I just think this particular issue it to blame on those who did the invitation, not the crew at The Gathering.
And yes, I know I've helped your trolling to get more attention to Outline; you're welcome. Need to remember to book tickets soon. :)

Kusma: I wish it would have been released in a Wild compo, that would have been fitting indeed. But it was released in something called a "Freestyle Video compo", which (as far as I can determine) is an entirely different beast consisting of gamer oriented material, and (unless I am gravely mistaken) was much less publicized in demoscene circles than some of the other compos. Which is a shame, because indeed, all we wanted in return for this support is some exposure :)
Concerning quality/technicalities/etc: The intro doesn't use the pipe bender hardware as such, that would be downright dangerous, and we wouldn't want to hurt any factory workers in the process ;)
Hollowman: Awww that's so cuuuute! Let's hug :)

Next time, perhaps pay a little more attention to what compos they're going to have.. for example, if you spent a few minutes on gathering.org, you would have noticed that there was a Freestyle Video compo but no Wild.
@hollowman: i would suggest you decline Peter's offer to hug...
The guy is so huge he could be a pipe bending machine by himself! ;p

phoenix: well, we hoped the rules would be interpreted/applied a bit more liberally and thoughtfully. we had people at both parties, if TG organising had preferred so, we could have easily entered the prod in saarbrucken instead. but the intention was to support the smaller event (in demoscene terms), so thats what we tried to do first. all we wanted in return was to get shown in a demoscene oriented compo, so we could reach our intended audience. it's a bit of a shame that we have to use other means to achieve this goal now, that's all...
Any word on the official Outline invitro(s) yet?
The pipe-bender version is nice, but a little bit too niche for most people.

Rowley: were you in contact with any of the compo organizers? Did they explicitly tell you that you should enter the freestyle video compo and not the demo compo? Or is this something you "presumed" yourself? If you wanted it shown in the demo compo, we would only show the realtime demo itself and not the surrounding video... Is that what you wanted? If you wanted us to show the video, this compo was the only suitable one.
That being asked; it could be worth mentioning that the freestyle video compo had quite a big crowd this year and was actually watched by most sceners at the party.

Well, Duckers beat me to it, but since the compos are my responsibility I'll throw my 2 cents in anyway.
The entry was displayed in the compo it was delivered in, and to the best of my knowledge we received no request to show it in the demo compo instead.
As has already been mentioned, the included readme states the following:
I am sorry that you are unhappy, but it's hard for me to see how we should have guessed that you wanted this in the demo compo. Considering this I think it is pretty far fetched blaming us for anything, to be honest.

Just for the record: I never claimed this should have been in the democompo. So if this, as you say, was the right compo for the prod, where's the rest of the entries? Can't find them on scene.org, pouet or your website, am I overlooking something?

BAH! Here you have the chance to make the ultimate industrial demo and you wimp it out. It's like hiring Arnold to act as the terminator and then replace explosions with ballet dancing just because he was a governor.
PS: Video prod/Delivery -> Wild unless specific "odd" compo with hardware present.

Which other "demoscene related compos" that we actually hold would you suggest it would fit in then?
Alternatively: what phoenix said.

Yes, you are.
ftp://ftp.gathering.org/TG/2011/CreativeCompos/FreestyleVideo/
It typically takes some time before the scene.org and ftp.gathering.org are in sync, because we like to make sure we got everything right before dumping on scene.org (ftp.gathering.org we can control directly, scene.org is outside our "jurisdiction"). Expect the scene.org release dir to be complete at latest by the weekend (we have jobs and lives that were neglected during easter too).

None, I'm afraid (still downloading those other entries so I can say for sure). Which is rather depressing, in a way, but so be it.
Incompetence is a fun word, wanna talk about it?
Seems that you feel an urge, so spill the beans!
