I've read that twice now, and I'm still confused. It's an online competition, using a virtual lab. With a fixed date + time, and free beer + pizza. Do I watch on the computer and wait for a delivery?

Sounds cool though, anyway. I guess there's going to be some kind of online compo for webgl or something?

It specifically mentions "classic demoscene", which means only raster bars, sinus scrollers, and starfields will be allowed. I guess they're aiming for a retro thing...
So how can classic DemoScenes improve the web?! i thought <marquee> was eradicated some years ago :D
In other news, the WHATWG proposed the inclusion of the <demo> element into HTML5. However, if attributes like `maxlength=65535` will be supported is currently unclear, though.

Oh, don't worry. In order to be, like, totally contra-XHTML, I'm pretty sure the WHATWG will even bring <BLINK> back to fuck shit up.

It sounds like the event is going to happen at an NYC hackerspace. I wish I could have participated, but plus side it allowed me to network more with New York sceners and potential sceners. Yay for hackerspaces!
heh, came across this:

Demo Art

As a great example, the Mozilla audio API team is doing much more than just showing-off technology – Their demos have a huge artistic component. This approach to demo making is not new, the “art of demoing” has evolved for many years in a sub culture called the “Demoscene” – Artists working with code, music and computer graphics within very specific boundaries, regularly competing with each other on “Demopartys”.

How cool would it be if more groups like e.g. FARBRAUSCH (video at the end of this post), a famous demoscene collective, would create demos directly on the web platform!? STAY TUNED. Contact us if you want to get involved!! tobias /at/ mozilla.com Follow: @mozlabs

Nice, actually Cupid/Padua (http://www.wait-till-i.com/) is working for them - wonder if he's involved in any way.

Still think they have their terminology wrong: is it a bird, a demoparty or an online compo ?

Since they mention actual events and a partnership with ALT party, maybe it's just a browser demo compo allowing remote entries. Oh well.

lug00ber: Oh! I guess I missed that as I stopped following him on Twitter a while ago ... too much noise :p

Perhaps it's better for them to try to make a better browser than that sluggish Firefox 4.0 instead of some demoparty :)

Hey, a demo that runs on the web platform? That would be seriously awesome. Not the web browser platform, but the web itself.. all the computers, all the resources. Unlimited power! :O

I found this rather confusing. They aid it was an online demoparty, but I wasn't able to be at home to enjoy it all till 23.00. So I went to the site expecting some kind of livestream, a chat maybe, I don't know. At least some (interactive) features of the website that opened up. Nothing.

So it was just a small gathering of a few people, someplace where there was internet? Oh well, it is a start I guess. I would love to see Mozilla getting more involved with the scene. And with htlm5, SVG and all that, if it was to be implemented correctly on all browsers I guess some more sceners will make online releases at some point.

Well, we have the Webbrowser Demo Competition at Revision.

You all should just show them how it's done - maybe they want to support us in 2012 :-)

rez: Web O' Wonder ?

numtek and co.: "HTML5", SVG, CSS 2 and 3, Canvas 2D ( and 3D actually ) are pretty well covered across browsers. There are inconsistencies yes, but it is workable.

All things considered, current browsers have pretty decent processing and rendering performances. Add WebGL to the mix and suddenly we are getting closer to the more conventional demo platforms ( eg. Windows ). I'm not talking about kicking the top of demoscene pop in the nuts but for sure browser demos are gonna become more hairy real soon.

Maali: Java-Applets don't fit in the Webbrowser Compo btw. :-) But you can submit them in the PC Demo Compo.
