Why non-artists don't understand art?
category: general [glöplog]
adok: Tascha is autistic, not artist. she/he is someone who's spent far too many years of their life obsessing over reproducing photo-accurate reproductions of bipedal form. people are not impressed by that shit because it doesnt say anything...it doesnt make you go "oh yeah! i get what you're saying!". it's pure technique with no message or inspiration. this Tascha person may as well be a Xerox machine.
and quit digging up old post. fuckers!
Sorry about this. I was searching for that thread. This has good discussion too.
I recently had some discussion in a greek forum whether demoscene is art or not and while some other guy said it isn't, I insisted it is even though I know I don't have an accurate definition of art. I was thinking of the demoscene as yet another community of artists, in the sense that a demo has no usability in the outside world, so if it's not a screensaver, if it's not a game, if it's not a promotion of your brand new game engine, then what's left? Something to stare without a "logical" reason (logical for the outside world). Isn't this the same as someone who creates a painting for other people to stare, especially other artists who might try to understand the process behind it? For me, making demos has similarities to art.
Though, I abandoned this discussion because I realized it won't get us anywhere. The word "art" is confusing, some people use it in a different sense, to define which of the pieces of work are "deep" and which are swallow. I used it to define a community where people create stuff that don't have external use, but just to show their stuff and inspire other people to do similar stuff.

c. The product of these activities; human works of beauty considered as a group.
3. High quality of conception or execution, as found in works of beauty; aesthetic value.
4. A field or category of art, such as music, ballet, or literature.
5. A nonscientific branch of learning; one of the liberal arts.
6.

b. A trade or craft that applies such a system of principles and methods: the art of the lexicographer.
7.
a. Skill that is attained by study, practice, or observation: the art of the baker; the blacksmith's art.

I have come to the conclusion that the question "is it art?" is the same as "is it music?"
You have music that appeals to you, music that doesn't. Music that is generic or popular, and music that breaks convention. Art is the same and mainstream fantasy art is the like the visual equivalent of pop music, whereas abstract art might be like the equivalent of jazz improvisation or alike.
When viewing art, you simply need to ask, do I like it? What do I like about it?
I love Tashcha's work for the technical skill, the appealing colours and because I like looking at hot women. But it doesn't move me in the same way as The Triumph of Death by Pieter Bruegel the Elder for example, which is less visually appealing, but deeply evocative and sends chills down my spine. I personally don't rate minimalism because it evokes no feeling in me and I do not admire any technical aspects. As with music, it's all a matter of taste.

A great Man once said:

Echoing xernobyl, I think I'm asking is when does pretentiousness become just plain wankery?
For me pissing on a crucifix, sealing it in perspex then taking a photo of it isn't art. But then neither is leaving an unmade bed in a gallery or living in a plastic cube for months at a time. Yeah/no?

What's art? Never heard of it.
And what's understanding? Please, explain it.
I just don't like Damian Hirst
