Hi there, does someone remember the C64-like noter running on MS-DOS? There was custom 8x8 font, 320x200, colours, ability to play MODs or something. I'm looking for it but can't find it :(

I have this little noter :) It's called Da C64 Noter, has ability to change font, load SID file, change colors, and it's for DOS.

I don't know if it's original version, I downloaded it from some polish c64 site, that no longer exists many years ago. Maybe they are authors, because they were related to C64 scene. Maybe they just replaced original text in noter where was info about real author :)

It's not often I run across demoscene stuff I don't recognize, but this is one of those times. I started on PC scene in 1991 and have never seen a noter before. Can one of the oldskoolers older than me (!) explain what a "noter" is and how it is/was used?

Noters were a c64 tools/programs where you just typed, erased and change colors etc, and it would record all the keystrokes until you hit a designated 'finish' key and it would then spit out a small 'Note' progam that played back all the keystrokes so it feels like somebody is typing out a message to you, typos and erasing included.

So basicly a noter spitted out small executeable note programs that replayed a typed message, usually while playing a sid, custom 8x8 font and maybe some raster fx, as was the style at the time ;)

Holy crap, I created a noter for the NAID '95 party report having never seen one before! I added typing sounds to mine; did other noters do that?

On the Amstrad CPC, there is no easy way to read a text file. People could either make a BASIC listing with lots of PRINT statements, or, overdo it and add music, raster effects, etc.
Exodus's "Outch! Noter" was often used, to provide something similar to NFO files, or user manual with some demotools (mostly from Exodus themselves).
Interestingly, the noter just saves a copy of itself with the modified text, music, and raster lists, so the distributed self-executable "notes" are actually copies of the complete program, including the editing features. A great way to spread it efficiently.

Yeah, I remember Exodus noter. I love those noters on C64 and then great to see a good one on CPC.
