I don't know if my entry it was shown. I only knew remote entries were being accepted the last day, so I made the "demo" in a rush (2 hours before sending the entry). Here is a free flyby using the same engine (64k), but with manual control: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsaeFph4HPQ (BUT as said, it's not the non-interactive version for the partie...)

I did a free translation for the benefit of 99.9% of sceners. My original intentions were a more literal translation, but the lack of scene words such as demoshow, scener, demo, etc., kinda irked me.

On a side note, it's interesting how the Japanese prefer the term "megademo" as opposed to "demo", especially considering the former is sub-genre from years-gone-by.

Anyways...

----------

On January 8th, 2011, the "TokyoDemoFest 2011" demoparty was held in Japan. The following is hole's party report.

Historically speaking, the demoscene is not very active in Japan. The bulk of scene activity from recent years can be found on 2channel's "megademo discussion" thread, which gave rise to the online "2chparty" demoparty. However, in fall of 2010, qatnonoil used the ATND website to setup plans for a seminar and demoshow event. Many people expressed interest in the idea, and using this as inspiration, systemK and kioku joined together with qatnonoil to organize an actual party. Up until now, Japan has never had a true "offline" demoparty, and consequently the event announcement received a fair bit of attention overseas. Interest levels were high even before the party had begun, with some fairly well-known sceners pledging participation via the internet.

Seminars were held from noon until evening in a rented meeting room located inside Sumida Industrial Hall. The party itself was held during the evening and consisted of a demoshow followed by a demo compo.

Seminars included:
"A New 256 Byte Intro" by hole
"An Intro to Intros" by qatnonoil
"All About demoscene.jp" by kioku
"A Beginners Guide to Demos, From 2D Onwards" by Tomohiro
"How To Make A Demo" by kioku
"Understanding Executable Packers" by 301

All six seminars were streamed live via UStream, with several tens-of-people viewing said streams. They appear to have been well received, with audience members actively participating with many questions. Seminars were interspersed with short breaks, allowing party-goers time to socialize with one another. A significant portion of the audience was coders, but a large number of musicians also appeared to be in attendance.

Seminars were held from 1 PM until about 6 PM, after which everyone moved to a separate meeting room for the evening events. The evening was split into two parts, beginning with the demoshow, then followed by the demo compo. The demoshow mostly featured Windows-based intros and demos, but 301 brought along a real Amiga and gave a spectacular Amiga presentation. Since most people can only view these demos via video captures, it was thrilling to see them run on actual hardware. Amiga isn't that well known in Japan, but anyone visiting a demoparty is certainly familiar, and throughout the party shouts of "Amigaaaa!" could be heard. It was also during the evening event when many overseas visitors arrived. The demoscene certainly does cross borders. It was particularly impressive to see the reporters from Nolife who came to cover the party. #TokyoDemoFest IRC generally doesn't have many foreign participants, but they soon became very active on the channel during the evening portion. Looking at the logs afterwards, the popularity of the Amiga certainly seems strong.

Once the demoshow was over, the compo finally began. Submitted prods are as follows: (Final results)
1st Psycho by Eldorado
2nd Etherea1 by imerso
3rd Pirates Of The 777 Seas by RAZOR 1911
4th FromPlane2Color by Tomohiro
4th fractaliz by by Still
4th L.E.D. by n.h.k
4th plastice by by Still
4th transmission by by Still
4th XFire-Taxi by Tristar
5th intro-jnik by gyabo
5th The aurum by loonies&brainstorm.
5th The impact by nonoil

Despite the party being announced a little late, a total of 12 productions were submitted. On top of that, nearly half were overseas remote entries. It seems demosceners worldwide were very interested in Japan's first-ever demoparty. Even the mood on the pouet.net bbs was overwhelming receptive of the party.

This is the first "offline" demoparty I've visited, and it was both interesting and thrilling. The atmosphere of a live partyplace is not something that can be duplicated online. Although preparation and organization lacked here and there, I believe it was a successful first-time event. Even in Japan it seems there are many people interested in what the demoscene has to offer. If more events like TokyoDemoFest start appearing, I expect Japan will also begin to create high-quality demos.
