the Tron Legacy (aka Tr2n) thread

Nice spoiler :-) And yes, I was referring to TRON. There was a great sequence involving him in the first third of the movie, and then he's just behind a helmet the rest of the film. Either they ran out of money, time, or both.
The PC game Tron 2.0 from 2003 had a better story than the movie IMO.

Especially the light cycles part ! :D
A bit dissapointing, I have to say. Saw it last night gving the authors opportunity to impress me fully, choosing 3D IMAX version and... well, nothing happens. There are loads of just-good nowadays cgi, plenty of fetish inspirations, and waste of 3D potential. As somebody said - I'm done with 3D movies for now. There is just no point of overpaying some money for getting almost none. Sadly or ironically, the only movie which utilises 3d effect last time was... Jackass 3d. Unpretentious, just pure sick fun with 3d shots.
Tip: Save your money and go straight to 2d. Avoid IMAX or wait for Bluray - you'll lose nothing.
Any remaining feelings about the Tron? Olivia Williams - her career will rocket now. Most of the movie her role is to sit/stand/lay still and look pretty. And she do, a lot. And I'm really curious what is the point of playing bicycle game on the grid when you can jump over opponents light-wall? :)

I haven't seen this movie yet, but the only reason I loved avatar was because it used 3d sanely, ie NOT like jackass :P
I've just seen this film at IMAX. Great film in terms of actions sequences and the music is very cool, but the 3d is the worst I've ever seen at the IMAX - not a patch on Polar Express or IMAX's own documentary films - hard to tell which scenes are 3d and which are 2d and the non-cg characters look like cardboard cutouts.
I did enjoy it, but as Azzaro said, go see the 2d version.

Only Jackass 3D makes 3D worth.
Cut out the boring plot and awkward wooden actors (except for Bridges who is a pro) and make this a 90 minute daft punk movie with those effects and it'd be awesome.
What saddens me is that Tron 2.0 (the PC game) was supposed to be the movie, but that deal fell through while the game pressed on. If the 2010 movie had the 2003 plot, maybe we would have had something.
Yeah the plot was very weak and the actors pretty terrible. The main guy showed no fear or confusion at all about what was happening, he just went along with everything like it was just a bad day.
But what else do you expect from a mainstream movie? Good acting and good writing would just confuse today's braindead generation.

Wade: I don't expect much, but I expect at least some what was interesting in the 1st movie to be developed, even if it goes unnoticed by most people. There was room in here to do something a bit more special than HITLER STRIKES AGAIN.
I liked the original for its quirkyness and its flaky 'programming concepts turned Roman Empire + religion by some scriptwriter'.
Hmm, so even the fans go 'umm...'.
Should I go see it? Or not? It's a 60km + 60km drive for me but I'll go if it's worth it.

Photon: I think the original's philosophical point boils down to Walter's one line, "You know you can remove men like Alan and me from the system, but we helped create it. And our spirit remains in every program we design for this computer." It addresses real fears about the loss of the human element and what things will be like if computers are allowed to run themselves, and at every opportunity presents the real world as en-route to realising those fears. It also has a hefty stab at religion too, such as at the point when Yuri and Tron discover Flynn is a user (their deity) and he levels with them.
If you liked those things as well as the crazy effects, don't see this it'll piss you off. This is a dumb action flick about Hitler creating an Aryan race. It does have some very gorgeous CG but it has none of what little depth the original had, and doesn't at all bother to try and make the inside of the machine be in anything more believable than NEON LAND.
It's worth seeing for the soundtrack and effects but if that's all you care about rent the blu ray.

What Insectecutor said. That's a fantastic summary.
Amen to insectecutor, but I do want to say how much I appreciated the makers NOT having the characters spouting one-liners and breaking the 4th wall with pop/meme references. Also not having the characters trying to explain everything in some sort of trekian buzzword babble language. Very mature of them me thinks.
I don't understand why people have to take apart every film that comes out, I saw it for what it was, an enjoyable film. It's a bit like going on a rollercoaster and spending all the time thinking about what's wrong with it, instead of enjoying it.
8-bit buggery: I dunno. This was more like a rollercoaster that went in a straight line from its beginning to its obvious conclusion. I enjoyed the scenery but I could've done with a few twists and turns along the way is all.
The audio is awesome. The glow is awesome. The few 3d effects are okish. I wasn't aware that it's in 3d until I saw it, however I wish the 3d effects were better. The story was too thin somehow, too technical for non-techies and too poor for techies. Felt a bit too long.
The awesome tron babes.. I wish they were present much more throughout the movie.

It was mkay, but a new Matrix it was not ...
What the hell is an isomorphic algorithm?
I enjoyed it. My wife did, too, and she thought the first one was pretty lame. I like the first one. Didn't see this in 3D, and I'd rather not.
Good: Stunning visuals (except for one thing... see Bad). Stunning music. I thought the story was good, but I really wanted a lot more on the Isos. Not enough time spent on them. If there is ever a sequel (highly unlikely, but if), there better be more about them. Basically, the story had good ideas, but didn't go far enough with them.
Bad: CGI Jeff Bridges. At best he had a botox face. At worst he was very noticeably CGIed. I was anticipating something like the computer "de-aging" a la Benjamin Button with Brad Pitt. What I got was a very CGI head that looked like him but moved like a robot.
Also, no Bits. The bits, while not in the first movie for that long, were one of my favorite parts of it. I was quite disappointed by that. (Not to be confused with BITS. Very glad there was none of that).

I've seen worse but this movie really annoyed me at some points. If you like the whole aesthetics of the Tron universe just watch the glowing things and the nice soundtrack and be happy about that. Don't try to think about the story since there is very little of it and it doesn't make much sense :/.
... Also, don't get me started about the acting and the dialogue.

Shenlon: bits were there... just inactive.
I didn't like this one very much... too much "StarWarish"... Bridges is now a Tron Jedi!

Since the Netherlands is somehow excluded from a 0-day treatment, I haven't been able to see it yet. However, are the people who complain about the thin plot sure they saw the original? The story and pacing were hilariously bad. Phantom Menace bad. but being a kid, I didn't give a damn :)
Shifter: thing is... original Tron was quite visually amazing for its date... this one is just average (not bad at all, but not quite as amazing for these days)... so when even the plot doesn't work...
Hey JCL !
Glad to see your new shinning avatar. Is "chulo-chulo". :)
