why do you need perlin noise when it´s all black, specular shiny and flat glowing? I'm with xernobyl, Navis can do this in realtime, just let him use his webcam once again and capture himself once more and you will see.

I saw the movie the other day (3D). For me, the best of the movie was the music. Then the girl (Olivia Wilde). The visuals were disturbing - the lack of shadows (well, the lack of surfaces were shadows can get projected) plus the glowing and the infinite amount of transparencies made it difficult for me to understand the relative position and scale of objects. The fact that it was 3D made it even more confusing i think, often i didn't know if i was looking to something big or small that was close or fat, or behind or in front or what. Probably in 2D is better? But again, it's not that bad, and the music is cool cool cool! Very enjoyable movie! (thumb up)

iq: He said Ken Perlin, not Perlin noise. Ken Perlin won an oscar for his contribution to Tron, which was released 3 years before he invented perlin noise.

kusma: believe i remember him writing that the success of (the graphical impression of) tron was adding noise which made it look more realistic than without. cant find the post tho, but he had a very cocky homepage..

what iq said, I'll want to re-watch it in 2D. All the glass made it hard to focus. But the design was nice and coherent all over. Someone need to make a new nicer-looking armagetron in first person view with the levels they have in the movie :)

I didn't really like the music. I think the daftpunk bit it's quite overrated. I used to like daft punk by the way. But I'll go with inception's score. Or the social network's one.

I liked how they used the 3D. I mean the 3D glasses, putting lens flare effects in the closer layer. I haven't seen a 3D glasses powered movie yet that featured lens flares. Some actions scenes were quite nice, and overall the look was sexy. Very Kosinski.

However, I felt bad for Kosinski right in the first scene, when I saw that they got stuck in the uncanny valley with that cgi young Jeff Bridges :/ I bet they could have just used shadows or tricks like that to get it to look more attractive for real humans. That really put me off.

Oh, another thing they used for the experimented with the 3D glasses were all these subtle glasses with finger prints on top of the action. Really nice touch, help a lot to enhance the depth effect.

I also liked the 3D effects a lot in some of the scenes, and I thought that the soundtrack was rather good as well. The plot was a bit rushed and lacked detail and motivation for some of the narrative devices used. The style and design rocked, of course. At times it seemed like I was in a Traction demo.

I enjoyed both movies. The first for what it was trying to be, and the second for what it was trying to be for fanboys. Are they awesome movies? No, but they definitely have their moments.

I saw Tron 2 last night in a great theater with 3d and perfect picture and sound -- in that context, it's worth paying to see simply because it's gorgeous to look at. The inner fanboy in me was disappointed a lot -- there are many wasted opportunities, and a few production aspects felt quite unfinished (the handling of one particular character was a big disappointment). I also didn't think that Daft Punks' soundtrack was DA SHIT (it was ok, just not DASHIT). But it's still worth paying to see.

I didn't like the original tron movie and I won't bother watching this one.

20 No, seriously... I saw a 23 minutes 3D preview, was the first time I saw something with 3D glasses, and I was a bit disappointed, just to use an euphemism.

30 I used to like most of what Daft Punk have made so far and once again was I a bit disappointed. Big sounds, yep, but I felt like they sacrificed their musical identity in all this. Won't be lethal to what I think of them, but I was expecting something different, I guess.

This movie reminded me of any ASD demo.

I think I'm done with this generation of 3D now. I went 3D because of the enthusiastic company I had. And it sort of fit the nostalgia. Had I gone solo, I would have gone 2D and been able to focus and make sense of the Grid better when the camera spins around and the cuts are fast. And the glasses weigh on your nose uncomfortably, there's glare, fingerprints and the frames in your field of vision preventing you from ever just forgetting about the glasses for a second.

But about the movie. Yeah, it was pretty good. I liked how Flynn was very much stuck in his younger self's delivery lacking human social interaction for so long. I dug the visuals and I look forward to seeing them in glorious undisturbed 2D (see paragraph 1). Except for young Flynn's mug. mr.doob made a good point about the uncanny valley. YOUR CGI IS NOT THAT AWESOME, STOP OVERUSING IT. I thought they were going for more practical effects in the beginning where they are showing young Flynn in 1989 from the back and with more subtle and obstructed use of the CGI so that you don't get several minutes of close ups to really rub in the uncanny valley.

The music, ok for the most part with a couple of weaker/mismatched moments here and there. And a couple of really good ones.

And lastly, spoiler warning, I think trixter was referring to the character of Tron. Seeing what his role, utilization and on screen time were reduced to, they could have dropped his name from the title and called it something else. This was playing it safe.
