Vic20 vs C64 power supply
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Does anyone know if the DIN7 VIC-20 power supply is compatible with the C-64 one ?
I was not able to find relevant information abour the vic-20 stuff (looks there was multiple versions...)
thx !

it is compatible.
Wow. A valueable answer on a Pout-BBS ;)
Assuming you trust it =)
According to http://www.c64-wiki.de/index.php/VC-20#Technische_Details there are 2 versions: an older one which only outputs 9V AC (the VC-20 generates all other voltages internally) and a newer one which is identical to the C64 one.
it's not compatible because the vic20 one is made of other stuff!!!!!!!

Thx Scoutski & Kabuto.
MeteoriK, I did not understand... was it serious or a not-really-funny joke ?

Well, i just killed one C64 PSU by having it too long on the Vic20....lets do the math:
C64 PSU 9V = 1A
VIC 20 9V = ~2.7A (25W)
To put things simply: The 9 Volts of the C64 PSU are not made for driving a whole computer!
I simply soldered 2 wires to the 5V main line inside and connected them to a PC PSU.
Even if the machine doesnt use 25W and maybe just 20, you still overload it. For me it wasnt difficult....Are you good with solutions like mine? :P

Good point Exin,
In my case I should be safe, I'm using the VIC20 PSU to replace a dead C64 PSU.

Before you buy one off fom Ebay, make sure the connector fits. There are 2 kinds of PSU connectors on the Vic 20. See here:
the Power supply connector with two pins for a connector that is shown here:
http://www.zimmers.net/cbmpics/cbm/vic/manual-b.html
And the normal C64 like power connector.
The one with 2 pins looks like a small brick.
So be sure you buy the right one or come to tum and i'll solder you a 5V connector. 5V PSU's with the right amount of power are easier to get....
