let's talk about tinnitus
category: general [glöplog]
I have it since iam 8 years old - after an accidential hit to the ear ...
The nasty is, that this ear is "dead" hearing nothing except that HIGH BEEP TONE, mostly its a matter of concentration, if you dont think to much about you dont hear it - or it dont disturb that much ...
Funny that while writing these lines it gets ultra loud !
Its not annoying at all, just for me in a loud club or place everybody is shouting i cant focus to listen to the one speaking to me, so iam mostly not able to communicate when its very loud around me, walkman or Bluetooth headsets are horror for me aswell ...
All tries and doctor sessions ended up very very bad, mostly in only hurting operations - so i dont try to cure it anymore !
I heard there is a new "mp3 player based therapy" , but its around 3000 Euro and no aussurance is not covering it !

Yeah - the therapy conclusion is that after a couple of days of listening to badly encoded MP3 files, you realize that the MP3 artifacts actually sound worse than the ringing in your ears. I hear there is a similar therapy for the Atari ST... ;-)
I've got rings at around 14.5k. Since playing in a band when I was 15 with no earplugs. (I blame Sabian crash cymbals!) Vocal booth at work makes it jump out at me big time! I've left my "soundproofed" computer and aircon feeding directly into my room so there is at least a little bit of atmos. Doesn't bother me most of the time.

is this thread for real?
i have a beep > 8 kHz here and then, mainly issued by strong neck/spine problems due to an accident a couple of years ago. If i have bad blood pressure, i notice some kind of low freq noise.
i also have a problem with sound > 4 KHz at low volumes. just noticed it last year when i had fever and my girlfriend had to remind me that the thermometer is beeping.
it's like the freq and above is totally gone when mixed with other frequencies. (background noise, music) - my doctor says this is mainly due to overusage of headphones and loud music in the last 10 years. and occoured during the stage where i tried to design filters for the very first time for my softsynth, having headphones on. (BAD!)
since then i do not use headphones anymore (or less than an hour/day), lowering the volume and using earplugs at parties. lets hope that i don't destroy anything again.
well, strange thing if you watch an old demo and you know that you have put some syncs here and there, without hearing the tone anymore. (except at FULL volume)....

I also have a very high "whistle" around 18Khz in my hears... but it's very faint and I can only hear it when there's "slience"...
Well, I don't think this classifies as tinnitus, but it's there.

So is there a name for my disorder? I have an inability to filter out sounds/noise/background. Meaning, I hear everything almost equally and it's very hard for me to concentrate on a group of sounds while trying to filter out the others. Pros? Music is awesome. Cons? In a movie theater, bar, restaurant, city, etc. I have a very hard time understanding what someone is saying to me. Pro/Con: I have gotten very good at noise filtering in sound programs...
nonstop tinitus @ 19khz plus synesthesia at high frequencies. doing sports and hearing music helps alot. got it after some jam sessions with our local bands + the nonstop HF sound from electronic hardware. it even disappears when everything is perfect and im lying on the beach. but it gets really loud when i'm stressed or in hypoglycemia
I have sometimes during stress a tinnitus at around 10khz. So no stress for me. And im sensitive to frequencies around 3khz. So i hate the ipod for having no equalizer.
A german TV magazine broadcasted some news about the neurostimulator some weeks ago, here's a link (german only): http://bit.ly/9ZzerQ
trixter: sounds like what people describe when they're getting old ;)
no, really. sometimes its hard for me aswell... distinguishing 'useful' information from background noise. this is mainly due to my damaged ears (see above). sorry bro

Great, my condition is mental + failing hardware :-/
I'm also particularly susceptible to earworms. If something gets stuck in my head it stays there for days, sometimes weeks. I almost lost my mind hearing "Bad Romance" for about 9 days straight when I woke up, showered, rode train to work, went to the bathroom, trying to fall asleep, etc. (Before you ask, I fucking HATE that song; only songs I can't stand get stuck in my head. Criteria? Both the lyrics AND the music have to be inept. If only one or the other, I can ignore it just fine. Both sends the inner musician into a frothing rage.)
Pro and I will start a support group :)

Always had a 'tv-tone' in my head, cannot remember a time where I did not have it. No problem whatsoever, just heard it when in bed, didn't bother me.
Last saturday I went to a hardcore punk concert. Forgot my earplugs (I always wear them on loud concerts). Got drunk. Stood up front, close to speakers. Stupid.
Now the tone has gotten louder and I have a strange feeling in my right ear. Gonna see a doctor tomorrow. It's been three days since the concert, maybe there is still hope.
Hooray for stupidity, how to ruin yourself with some bullshit.

I had tinnitus for about two weeks, the pitch was a C-7 (if you count C-5 as the middle C of the piano) so you make the math and give me the frequency :)
It was only in the right ear, and it started one day when I woke up. It was rather disturbing, specially when playing music, which I do everyday for a living.
Then, after two weeks, it was gone. How weird is that? It got me worried to the point of thinking of going to a doctor, but then I had to cancel it cause, well, it was gone...

I don't go out so I avoid getting my ears raped by others
jeenio, how loud was your tinnitus? Did you not panic during those two weeks, that it may stay forever?
For years and years. Caused by too much volume on DJ headphones and iPod earplugs.
Hehe, kHz. So you matched your beep to test-tones I guess?
I had this after programming large CNC-machines. It's mostly gone. It sometimes comes back when working many hours or sleeping few hours, but it's not at all as bad as it was 10 years ago.
My solutions at the time was
1) never completely quiet when going to sleep, it can make the brain 'fixate' on the beep (I can recommend sitar music for all kinds of trouble falling asleep, not related to tinnitus.)
2) never use handsfree, headphones (or as little as you can manage)
3) stay away from too deep thinking (haha!) - no, not really, but programming/intense action gaming until 5 minutes before going to bed made my tinnitus worse. I guess it's related to the same as working long hours above.
Tinnitus CAN lead to panic-anxiety, rapid heart-beating etc, especially if it disturbs your sleep. If you get many nights with almost no sleep you should get immediate help from a doctor (to at least get back on track with your deep-sleep), it can give permanent heart and brain problems, and destroy your life.
Apart from what worked for me (more sleep, no ear-punishment, and reduce stress/change evening habits) I can't think of anything else.

It's that. If you don't care about it at all it is a moot point (as it is for me, never cared, don't notice it..) but I can imagine people freaking out about it.
Well, it depends on the severity of the symptoms. *It* will freak *you* out if it's just that little bit too invasive, you have no say in it. At least for me when it was at its worst it 'took over' your attention from ignoring it, to trying to ignore it, to sweaty sheets and zero sleep which made it worse.
That's a form of serious anxiety and though I'm not disputing tinnitus being the cause, everyone has a different tolerance for physical symptoms before they start causing anxiety.
Been deaf in my R ear since I was 13 - lawn mowing, altho the Dr. @ the time did agree with me that getting repeatedly bashed around the ears from yoof was probably a contributing factor - thanx mum!
I can however hear dog whistles & the like (don't know the freq.). It hertz (sorry.).

Doc said feeling in ears is normal, and will go away by itself. The tinnitus will go away as well - i.e., return to the old level (although I find it hard to judge if it already is at the old level or not. admittedly I only notice it when I think about it or in bed).
Did a hearing test, came out perfectly. How do you guys do on hearing tests? Is ability to hear correlated with tinnitus?

imho violent ear losses almost always come with a new tinnitus. Slow ear loss do not.
i had a so called sudden hearing loss 2 weeks ago. it was only a weak one, so no vertigo, etc. it was just my damn left ear that freaked out for a week. imagine the right ear receiving everything as-is, and the left ear was pitching down everything for one octave. higher frequencies such as female voices started to sound clipped and ring modulated.
then suddenly, one morning, it was gone.
i'm happy it's over.

Well, seems I got it for real. One week and still hissing. So what now? I'm pretty bummed by it
Your stories guys of ignoring¬ caring are pretty inspirational, thx guys
