Why Huge Screen compos are underrated on pouet?

category: parties [glöplog]
maybe cos they're 1000:1 (roughly estimated) when it comes to other type of productions?

gloom: let me myself clearer. The votes on pouet are not reflective of the quality of prods released for the huge screen, given the resolution constraints, ...

So I invited poueters to give their opinion.

It seems that huge screen compos only can be evaluated for what they are when watched live. As a consequence, average rating of prods will always be lower when given on pouet by sceners who have not attended the party.

Too many thumb downs mean nothing given the enthousiasm and the happiness we have when watching 'em live.

sometimes, I get sad when people thumb down productions I really like.
ulrick: if i understand you right, are you saying that "emulators / video arent as good as the real thing"? :)

Gargaj: in this case video is probably better than the real thing, if you're watching at home and don't happen to have your own hugescreen :) Assuming it's a video camera pointing at the screen at least, rather than a high quality capture.

(and speaking of captures vs. footage, anyone else think captured video mixed with the ambient sound from the party is the connoisseur's choice?)

that was my point, really :)

Gargaj: i would prefer to see real time only prods on the HS.

As far as I know, all prods must be videos to be watchable due to technical problems that prevent good display of real time prods (or no display at all of real-time prod is feasible, i don't know).

I guess that most prods such as "madchip" by FRq were originally real time. So far, real time prods converted to video and Wild converted to video have been allowed as HS entries.

By the way, there is the .exe of our release for the HS compo here on pouet, not the video :).

ulrick: so what _IS_ your point? o_O

Gargaj: poueters who have not attended main#4 and 5 and want to rate a HS prod should be more indulgent. This is my point. :/

Actually, reading this post could help them to understand what a HS prod is.

ulrick: indulgent in what? :O sorry, this is really going over my head :/

ulrick, its impossible to show anything real time on the hugescreen so having only real time prods would be kinda pointless, eh?

nosfe: some groups did real-time prods just for fun then converted them to videos as requested by the orgas.

gloom: the screen has an inclination of pi/4 or so. I gave too reasons for the underrating :

- the resolution (length = 10 times the height)

Assuming you're X meters away from the screen, and it is at an height of Y meters... it makes it like 20/1 :P

Nope, I don't watch TI productions.

you should, this one is really nice ;p

Yes, poueters should be aware that huge screen prods are not traditional wild entries (the prods are designed for the huge screen : resolution, colors, ...). And vote accordingly. Or not vot at all : the live captures the orgas just uploaded are great, but the experience can never be the same than being there.

Anyway, the entries at MAIN #4 or #5 were not that great (except for a few ones). Maybe demomakers don't take the time to make a proper prod since they know they will be underrated/underexposed on pouet... vicious cycle :D.

Also, I don't know if it's really fair that realtime prods compete with animations. The sad truth is that an animation is probably the easiest/best choise if you make a huge screen entry (because of the technical restrictions of the huge screen). Well, actually you do how you want, as long as the result is cool =).

I hope that with time the hugescreen compo will get more attention, and people will learn how to get the best of this amazing screen, so that we will see more and more great (and thumbed up :d) huge screen entries.

BTW: the sync problem @MAIN #5 was a one time issue? Or is it better to avoid relying heavily on the sync when you design a prod for the hugescreen? (since we are outside - delays+echos-, maybe it's a bad idea ; I don't really remember how it was @MAIN #4).

(N.B. : sorry for my frenglish)

I think people are getting way too hung up over Pouet ratings. If people vote and comment on prods without accounting for the context in which they're supposed to be viewed... fuck 'em.

Also,

WATCH THEM FROM THE STREET GODDAMMIT. IT RULES!

I'm so gonna experience this live next year. Just one question, though: If it's best viewed at a given distance, outside in a parkinglot - how is the sound-setup? Does light/audio traveltime cause noticable sync-problems?

ehmmm... somehow this thread inspired me to check out some of those magnificent "HS prods". i wish i hadn't...

ffs. seriously. dude. ulrick. you are opening a thread just so you can bitch about that fagadelic twister+plasma+scroller thing of yours not getting enough votes?! that's just... pathetic. how old are you?

now don't get me wrong, the arles huge screen is very, very impressive. but running a bunch of mediocre-at-best fx slapped together in 12 hours on it is not. it's like smearing your diarrhea over a chocolate cake, then complaining people won't eat it...
