RF modulator?

I also have one of those - the real question is which C-machines did not come with an internal RF-modulator/RF-out... old Vic-20s ?

Yeah RF modulator, I got one of those with my vic-20. Ditch it and get a video port > composite lead, they usually turn up in old 'video repair' kits strangely enough.

is the DIN-5 port the usual vic 20 video output ? This port doesn't exist on C64 right ?
It's the only video output on the Vic-20, but the C64 also has one.

yeah I use the same lead on both.

All but very early C64's have 7-pin AV connector. The 2 extra pins have S-video components: much better picture, no comb artefacts.

exactly what svo said.
Also these modulators are often broken, the rf modulators I have for my VIC-20 has a black casing.

My Vic-20 modulator is also black, but works just fine..

I dont have one. But lets face it, the Composite picture is bad enough already that you cant even make out the pixels in multicolor...

All of the Amiga's except the A600 and A1200.

Exin: That was a Joke!?!! (Vic20 Multicolor Pixels have the size of small Cars)
IIRC the VIC-20 even has S-Video signals right at the VIC-Chip.

Shockwav3: Yes it has. But commodore engineers didnt think it would be useful. But there's a flaw, i think. The signals are, too weak to connect to the TV directly. I think additional parts are needed.

ZY: Nope. I even saw it on your computer on Oxyron Party. Pictures in multicolor "mode". A mess. As soon as there are many different colored pixels next to each other, the edges become "crispled". And when there is some chessboard pattern with close colors, it becomes a grainy mess. (And i'm talking about pixels, probably as wide as Atari's pixels in 16 greys/colors/9 color modes...)

It looks different from other computers. It's still somewhat clear, not just blurry, like on C64 for example.

But there's still hope. I saw Streetuff having a Vic20 with some Video mod.
It looked nice, even on a LCD screen. But it looked too complicate to put it into my Vic20 in unused condition.... Since, i think it needs to be either soldered onto the board or as some kind of extra board directly connecting to the VIC chip...

Exin: Prolly nothing a few resistors/transistors or a dual op-amp can't fix.
Gotta have to bug streetuff, so make sure i'm not re-inventing the wheel.

http://sleepingelephant.com/denial/wiki/index.php?title=S-Video_output

That's the circuit streetuff used, which basically kills the composite out and replaces it with S-Video, yet is super-easy to build. Quality pretty much looks as good as it gets.

by the way, thanks for all those details, but I guess this RF modulator won't be really useful for anything.
Come on, how are we supposed to improve the horizontal resolution if people "fix" the "problems" of the composite signal?

Besides, there are people who actually prefer big blurry pixels to big rectangular ones.
viznut: The only problem is, the picture is not blurry, its grainy and irritating. :)

Oh great. Watched 2 demos and now the machine displays Black screen. (Its not the fuse, blind load from disk doesnt show a reaction...)
