PS3 homebrew "for real" now?

category: general [glöplog]
since the last fw update (3.41) they also reserve the right to update firmware components "silently", ie download and install them without your consent.... which is a bit fishy atleast in germany.

[quote]if ps3 has really been hacked, that is a sad thing. ps3 was the last platform without illegal copying, and there has to be some place where i can make a living.
[/qoute]
without modchips and easily copyable media and all the piracy the original playstation would _never_ had such an enourmous impact in the first place..
same for ps2... -> so maybe there wouldn't be a ps3 at all now.
just my 2 cents

this looks pretty promising: http://www.reghardware.com/2010/09/01/open_source_ps3_jailbreak/

Open source, just needs a specific USB flash drive and enough clue to compile it. And it's intended for homebrew rather than warez. Although I doubt that will last long ;)

Just to knitpick, it isn't a USB flashdrive that is needed, it's a USB microcontroller devboard.
A little more expensive (about $20 or so), but still well worth it to get homebrew on my PS3.

Now all I need to do is port the AT90USB firmware to a Atmega168 (Arduino) I have laying somewhere and we are all set...

Ouch!, no hardware USB support on Arduino (atmega168/368) allthough there is a software USB stack, from the looks of it, doesn't seems an easy task...

Double Ouch!: and then all we need is an SDK for the PS3... that is only available to registered developers...

On second thought: we might not be there yet (homebrew "for real" now), albeit a step closer, nevertheless.

PSFreedom seems to run on N900 and Palm Pre. Allowing unsigned code for the PS3.

The question is will they make the current hack(s) compatable with 3.42+
? ;-)
added on the 2010-09-07 19:16:27 by magic magic
hardly. it will probably go the same route as with the psp.... ie custom hacked firmware.

It seems very hard to find any of those AT90USB boards (Teensy, AT90USBKEY etc.), somehow every retailer has seen a unusually large influx of orders the latest days...
Oh well, sooner or later I will find one!
Btw, I'm still at 3.15 (didn't want to give up OtherOS until there was another option to run code) but now I guess I'll need to move up to 3.41. Any reputable source to get the 3.41 PUP for updating via USB? Don't want to accidentally end up with 3.42!!!

I find it a bit strange that (AFAIK) there still hasn't been even a single "Hello world"-demo released, the only thing out is that Backup manager.
Is there enough info available to be able to build a simple .PKG if one somehow were to obtain the leaked SDK, or are things still in the low-level-figure-things-out-stage?
I haven't been able to find any dev-community info, but perhaps they are staying below the radar as long as the SDK is kind of illegal.

uhm, you must be looking at the wrong places :) hello world is out there, and making pkg files with the sdk is as easy as typing make :)

groepaz: Nice... I must suck at searching though, because I can't seem to find any places discussing homebrew PS3 coding, ps2dev.org had some stuff ion their boards before in the good old days when 2.xx RSX exploit was in use, but that site seems gone now.
Have any relevant links to share? Or if it is a bit hush-hush and not fit for posting here, mail to BB Image :)

ps2dev.org is down indeed, and very unfortunate ... the svn is gone too :(

as for sites, try the usual shady suspects... maxconsole, gbatemp, qj.net etc pp - you wont find what you are probably looking for there though, its 99% warez babble. will take some more time until a non-warez site for coders emerges from somewhere i guess :)

You can discuss about ps3 homebrew coding on the lan.st forum. You can also join the #ps3dev IRC channel on Efnet.
