the Ultimate Meeting 2004: 4 days or just 3 days?!?

category: general [glöplog]
We, the orgas of tUM, ask you: how long should the next tUM be - 4 days, as we're actually planning or 3 days just as last year?
Since we plan to have Amiga-compos at tUM*o4, we thought one day as bonus would be nice.
Some people already told us 4 days would be too long, though.
Now, tell us your opinion!

as much as i like the tum, i'd prefer it to be a 3-day event. beeing trapped in a hall for 4 days because of wintertime wouldn't exactly be my thing ..

Never exaggerate the feeling of a well nice scene-party to its very extend to fall deeper afterwards as expected!! ;-))

tUM ist really a nice event...and is positioned to replace the (good _old) The Party...!!!
The date from 27th - 29th is surly one of the _best_ dates of the whole year (similar to the easter weekend with breakpoint!) as it's right in the middle of the 'dead days' after x-mas (celebrations) and right in time before new year's eve parties...

To extend _this_ now by an additional day would result in either having to _start_ one day earlier...which might result in 'trouble' for people getting on the road in time to reach the party after x-mas days...

or to add one day to let it last till 30th...could result again in 'trouble' being able to regenerate your body and your soul right in time after the event to be prepared for right the _next_ huge party(ies) at new year's eve !! ;-)

That's why I would _definitely_ vote for keeping this a _classical_ 3-day event as it used to be and is _best_ for that specific time-slot of the year!!

Just because BP is a 4-day event (and that's also just because of the time-slot...(easter-weekend in germany is 4-days off!!) and mekka also was the same party-period.
It's not needed to 'cover' that kinda 'feature' for other events now, too!

A classic scene-party normally is and always was a typical 3-day weekend event! :-)
Let's keep it the traditional way also in future! ;-)

My two cents...

same opinion as Weasel - 3 days are perfect. If it's one day longer, it would either interfere with christmas (which enough sceners actually [have to] celebrate) or you'd bee to tired for New Year's Eve.

Keep it as it is :)

imho, you guys had serious problems having the attention of the attenders for 3 days. thus, you should rather think of how to really entertain people that travel hundreds kms. demo-party ain't just about computers, competitions and on-screen advertisments. we want some videos, films, more music, etc. it is to be stressed that I extremely enjoyed last year's events. it's just that I can think of better ways of improving TUM than the one of extending it to 4-days. besides, my liver might not make 4 long days ;)

i'd go for 3 days too, the hotel's getting too expensive if you do it 4 days (oh and btw. that chinese hotel thing last year was cheap, on one hand, but fucking dirty ;-)) flapjack is right: For example (yes, for advertisment, too) Buenzli offers a non-stop entertainment program every year - and we're a 3-day event. Also, think of how, spoken from orga to orga, you want to stand 4 days as orgas if you're not a big team as the Breakpoint guys are. Anyway, if possible in _any_ way, I'll of course show up at TUM 04 again, since the last few TUMs were great! I understand Tomcat saying he want it four days, if you think of the long journey he has to take to arrive at the partyplace.

I vote for 3 days as well.
same reasons as stated above - christmas and new year.
apart from that I remember ASM'99 being a 3-day party as well, with the old line of competitions (demo/intro, gfx, msx for PC, Amiga and C64) without any combined compos and it worked out fine without 24/24 compos running :-)
@unlock: hotel too expensive, *muah* ;-) sleep at the party!! =)

4 days full length won't perhaps help TUM getting better... nontheless, I really appreciated the possibility of getting at the partyplace the day before, at night... perhaps you could go for the 3+1 night formula... like:

"you can arrive the evening before, chillout, listen to some demomusic and watch some demos on the big screen to be fully warmed up on the first day"

agree with dixan...

since i sort-of plan to go, i agree with dixan as well.
same way breakpoint was stretched to 5 days (everyone arrived on thursday anyway :)

Hm, well, yeah, that's a compromise. But why rent the place for 1 more day for half a dozen visitors, just to listen music? We can do the same in a hotel room.
added on the 2004-06-24 13:04:18 by tomcat tomcat
tomcat: I don't really think they would need to rent the room for one more day since it's almost impossible to set up the party on one single day anyway. So they probably have the additional day already included in the rental agreement.

3 days is fine with me, 4 days might be a bit long.

On a less serious note: I fail to see how the addition of Amiga compos might relate to an extra day of tum. I'm not sure if these compos are going to be exceedingly long, or that amiga people need more time for a surprise compo that others ;)

Dunno, making it one day longer would result in people not being able to rest a day before new years partys. Usually after a demo party, a day of sleep is a nice thing to have. Starting the party one day earlier might collide with xmas family visits etc.

So my vote goes for 3 days, maybe with the "you may already arrive the night before while we are still settings things up"-option dixan suggested.

If TUM would be 4 days, I'd probably still attend all days.

three days please! i couldn't bare hanging with germans for 4 days!!! ;)

(nah, bullshit, but i think 3 days is more then enough for a demoparty)
added on the 2004-06-24 17:48:29 by okkie okkie
yeah, three days is fine

If opinions from people who won't make it this year count, then I'd say 3 days is more than sufficient.

...That is, of course, unless you have a stockpile of supermodels at your computer demoparty. In that case make it 4.

3 days...definitely. 4 days might work for bp, where you can go outside to flee from the smell :)
