Commercial GBA games by demosceners?
category: general [glöplog]
I still like to play with my good old Gameboy Advance (SP) from time to time...so I was wondering which demosceners were actually involved in the creation of GBA (or GBC) games.
I recall from one of Bobic's articles for 4Sceners.de that the guys from Shin'en ("Iridion" and "Iridion 2") are from the scene, as well as the people who did "Payback". And, obviously, "Pinball Challenge Deluxe" has some demoscene roots.
So, who was involved in the creation of these games? Are there some other games made by sceners that I missed?

Well, for Iridion 2: Code by Pink & Bartman. Music by Pink. Gfx by Wintermute. "Shin'en" is Japanese for "Abyss", so go figure :) We also did "Maya the Bee" on GBA, which has some nice eastereggs. Try holding the L- and R-buttons during the intro sequence and the "Shin'en" logo changes into a "Abyss" logo :)
Ah, thanks for the info. I actually bought the Maya game for my kids some time ago...nice game, will try the easteregg.
Purple Motion made the music for Project S11, but that's just Gameboy Colour. Just so you know...
Ah, Shin'en yes. They also did Nanostray 1,2 on DS.
Laxity/Kefrens was lead programmer on both Care Bears and Koala Brothers. I don't think we had other sceners on that crew.
I think Noogman did some gfx for games on the GBA...
Dexter/Abyss coded Maya the Bee, Judas/Endzeit did the gfx. Since Nanostray (DS) fadeOne/TRSI is doing gfx. Also, MadFreak/Anarchy(Julius/Lemon.) has done quite a bit of music.
Also, Paul Bragiel of Paragon5 has some list of demosceners in the games business somewhere

I worked on this and other GBA games at Karma Studios that were never released.

Somewhere deep down in my collection there's a copy of Project S11...nice classic shooter, didn't know that PM did the music though. Guess I have to search the cartridge and give it a listen... :-)

That demo version sure looks impressive for a GBA game - a shame that it wasn't released!

If emulation suffices, this might be faster than searching for the cartridge :)
What's the name of the GBA pinball game with music by virt and purple motion?
okkie: I dig the speed of that 3d engine. Is it using standard mode 4 polyfilling?

That's "Hardcore Pinball" from Paragon 5.

Stebo: Thanks!

Ah you're also the guys behind Jett Rocket, I just knew it when I read this kind of stuff:
‘Jett Rocket’ Character setup
Number of Triangles: 2508
Number of Vertices:1362
Number of Bones: 32
Number of Textures: 10
All Textures size: 290kb / 80kb (compressed)
Mesh Size: 50kb (compressed)
Animation: 244kb (compressed)
It looks really impressive at 60fps.

"We" ( me + some well-known sceners ) did GBA titles for Planet Interactive but a lot of them was unreleased ^^
A lot of great 3d engines for GBA can be found on youtube.
I am wondering what happened with that impressive engine found in Quake GBA and other unreleased previews.

It's a pity that many publishers relied on established franchises and licences (Pokemon, Spongebob, Disney movies...you name it) for their GBA games instead of giving developers time and money for more sophisticated engines. But that's the business...I guess nobody made a lot of money with titles like "Payback" or "Karnaaj".
On the other hand, a number of technically great games made it through development hell: The racing games from Tantalus (e.g. "Top Gear Rally") have a great 3d engine and the french guys from Infogrames did some impressive games as well, e.g. "V-Rally 3" and "Asterix & Obelix XXL".

Actuall Karnaaj Rally was developed by former Inflexion members (currently IDreams), right after they did a game on the same engine with Mini Machines franchise.
From my side - Hardcore Pool and some other minor credit (also for DS) with former Amnesty members. Ah, not to mention Paul/P5 was heavy supporter back then.
As for other platforms, some of us are still in the business.

Hardcore Pool is a cool game!
did a couple of gba soundtracks, all licences though. (Serious Sam, Nicktoons Unite, W.I.T.C.H)
4mat: ..and not forgetting the mighty GBC game "Warriors of Might and Magic"! Definitely the low point of my CV ;D
Graga: no idea, I'm not one of these programming fellas. I did music and level design for it. It's using Doom source (I made wad files for it :)) with some fucked up floating point correcting hacking.
