category: code [glöplog]
Three months have passed since my article on game developer magazine
was published, so I have put the text online here:

Ignition did have a windows version though... just... kindof stopped working in XP times :(

Hmmm.. Death Really does not really run "bad" in DOSBox these days. In fact, I still rather prefer playing it in DOSBox than the Windows version... :)
cool article!

Good one, thanks for sharing.

btw, it seems like remedy is taking a lot of credit for the port, but in the article it seems you did 100% of the job. and if i understand well, you're not part of remedy, right? feels a bit odd (though i guess if you'd mind, you'd have already made a fuzz)

@garagj: I didn't know that, but, in any case, I'd prefer it to be open source =) The game also looked better in 320x200 than in the higher resolutions..

@kbi: thanks

@skrebbel: I don't feel that remedy is taking credit; it's pretty clearly stated that I did the port, but it IS their game.

Nice article, sounds like a really fun and rewarding side project.
I always loved that game, played it until my fingers were bleeding back in the old DOS days.
Two months ago I came across your windows port by coincidence...and I played it over and over again...

So, thanks for the awesome port! Great job!

cool stuff!

the sound doesn't work right in linux (via wine) but the graphics looks alright.. what an undertaking from your part :-)

very interesting...

Its really a shame that most ms-dos games never release source-code... there is tons of games that would benefit of today hardware, bigger resolutions,...

it would be cool to mess around with the code and add new features.

also : i really life your articles about interpolation... (i know these before)

i'd love to have ports of the old FIFA games (from '94 to '98) :/
added on the 2010-08-09 19:39:13 by Gargaj Gargaj
hell, i'd DO the ports.
added on the 2010-08-09 19:39:25 by Gargaj Gargaj
@gargaj: yeah... it's just too bad it's so hard to even find who owns the rights to most old games.

out of curiousity, how much time did each phase take?
added on the 2010-08-09 19:49:27 by Gargaj Gargaj
@Gargaj: can't really remember, and things didn't exactly go in the order I wrote; it made more sense to write kind of like subsystem by subsystem than to jump back and forth a lot.

what is also nice with source code is to see how they implement some stuff.

for eg in death rally : how did they check what car are the first ? did they use some regular lines that are place across the road (like the starting line) ?
same for ai, collisions,... (did they use some image map or a check if car collided against a bunch of segments)?

most of the time looking at game data tell you a lot about these techniques...

I really loved that game and the windows port is great news to me.
I thought it would be really cool to see a gamepark (gp2x/wiz) or dingoo port.

And here is a similar one but how they did it without source.

Btw, everyone who loves Death Rally and owns a Gameboy Advance should try the game "Karnaaj":

http://www.gamespot.com/gba/driving/karnaajrally/index.html

Great game, plays a lot like DR. The game has some really fancy graphics and even uses polygon objects for a 3d effect like DR did.

Go, give it a try!

@emoon: the cool thing about posting these articles is that I get to hear about cool projects like that.

sol: thanx for the port...didnt know the game yet, is pure fun !
stebo: thanx for the hint, gonna play that thru aswell :D

and for all the Amiga-lovers: Overdrive by Team 17 ( altho there was a PC-Port aswell... )
i personally like super cars II and rocknroll racing best, but thanx a lot for the port and for convincing them to make it freeware!

Yes, Karnaaj Rally which I accidentally found one day by browsing some GBA roms, looks very very similar to Death Rally which made me wonder then if sol was behind it. No?
