New Platform added: Atari STE

category: general [glöplog]

since ps added an Atari STE platform category, it would be fine to have the corresponding prods moved there.
A few STE prods have been moved but there are still of lot to deal with.

Feel free to help by posting here any demo from the Atari ST category having STE features so they can be moved to the corresponding category.
(interesting features I mean, if it's only about a 4096 colors fade, I guess it doesnt need to be moved to the STE category)

I can't help wondering if that was really needed... The difference between the specs of the STF and the STE isn't that big after all. We could as well create categories for different Spectrum machines (48/128/Scorpion/Pentagon) or even A600, as there are probably a couple of demos around that require an A600 to run... This just splits the database even more.

exocet: i did recall that too. there is no easy solution for this problem.. i guess the solution passes by increasing the complexity of the search engine. allowing multiple platform choices.. i'll look into that after im done with exams.

How about adding a categhory for accelerated demos using nontypical 3d libraries. For example there is a number of Glide demos, and for people digging out their old 3dfx cards it would be interesting to find some demos.

Even OpenGL is probably rare enough for an extra cathegory. There are also several other 3d libs, maybe there are demos too.

Exocet: you cant compare A500/A600 and ST/STE.
In my opinion it was really necessary to split up the categories (blitter on STE, not on STf, different sound capabilities, 4096c palette...)

No STf demo can compare to this STE demo for instance:

Hmmm... The difference between STE and STF is smaller than AGA vs. (E/O)CS. On the other hand, there are separate categories for MS-DOS/GUS and MS-DOS too, and that difference is not more significant imho.

Overall, I don't see a problem with adding an extra category, even if it would be just to avoid that nasty 'Which TOS ROM should I use in my emu?' question. ;)

havoc: indeed, I didnt even think about that issue.

My concern was more "I own an STE, I want to watch demos using its specific hardware, let's browse pouet" :)

I dont understand why people would complain about this new category.

People who aren't 110% into the platform involved see no need in distincting between it's flavors. Common fact.

I mean, as Havoc's example of Msdos/Gus and Msdos goes: they may have been one expansion card apart as flavors go, but in 1993-1996, you might as well not try to run Gus demos. 99% simply wouldn't run without one. I'd consider that significant.

i think a pouet v. 0.9.0 is due :)
if a prod run on ST and did not run on STE
if a prod run on STE and did not run on ST
if a prod have speacial features when runned on STE, and less on ST
i think it's good to separate the category
and what about the STF model ?
ST = STF

but let's focus on the topic of this thread please:
if you find STE demos in the ST category, post the link here so they can be moved, thx.

"If you're looking for a cost-effective way into MIDI music making, the Atari is still a good option."

- Derek Johnson, Sound On Sound (April 2001)

Still seriously recommended by professionals and going strong ;P

MIDI in itself is, of course, quite a fascinatingly old beast by today's standards.
