I know it's probably a bit late now, but I was curious about this particular rule in the oldskool platforms page. Last year when we spoke to the oldskool demo crew, they told us that this rule is really unnecessary, since they run all of it from RReplay anyway. It just seems like a lot of hassle to put your entries on a floppy, if the compo crew just take the files from the PMS anyway.

If only they were all in PMS.. The oldskool entries are all a mess, part of the entries are only on physical media, some are only in PMS, and some kind souls actually do it right.

This is why i told you what I did. I have to do lots of messing around, converting the files to whatever format anyway. The demos are all tested with a real 1541 when we receive them, but if they run identically from 1541u, we run them from 1541u to save time in the jury and when recording them.

Thus the rule is a bit pointless, since I can't enforce it. There wouldn't be much of an oldskool/extreme compo of I followed everything to the letter. Most of the competitors either choose to bend every rule or disregard them. I'd also waste a lot of time having to explain to a lot of irate sceners why their prod was disqualified.

BTW, if you've always felt that you'd do a better job running the oldskool compo, grab my sleeve at the arena or at the boozembly cliffs. There might be a trainee opening for oldskool/extreme for next year's asm.

Umm, and the job opportunity is generally open, not just for the person I replied to.

Of course there's no guarantee you'll get the job, but isn't that always so for anything you have to apply for. :-D

visy: ever heard of procedural C64 gfx that could realisticly compete with procedural pc gfx? me neither. just the idea of aesthetically pleasant procedural c64 images itself is pretty far-fetched, let alone the idea of more than just 1-2 c64 people putting the effort to come up with anything for the compo. what this 4k limit means in practice is that all the c64 graphics artists are ruled out, unless they want to paint a 4 color bitmap. the executable graphics compo is a typical assembly mess by design.

hempest: See the discussion from three pages back. I don't think anyone particularly *likes* this as a solution, but (according to Abyss) oldskool graphics doesn't have enough entries to justify a compo of its own, so the alternatives are 1) kill it off, 2) have a bizzarro coders-vs-graphicians compo like last year with rules that make no sense, which people hated last year (apparently), or 3) make a token effort to accommodate oldskool platforms in another compo (but keep the rules consistent across all platforms). It seems the orgas have settled on 3 as the least sucky solution.

gasman: okay then. I hadn't been following the discussion. that "4k for all platforms" rule just caught my eye and it didn't seem to make any sense (and it still doesn't). maybe they should've just killed the weakling.

Hi, we are working with the Spanish Embassy here in Finland and they've agreed to sponsor the travel expenses for 1-2 speakers to ASSEMBLY seminars.

I've reached out to a few folks I knew but unfortunately the timings didn't quite work out. So if you want to bring a bit of the Spanish demoscene to ASM and have an interesting topic to share in our seminars OR if you have a tip about someone we should definitely get from Spain, please drop me an email!

Well since Boozembly (and Assembly too, apparantly) is the only upcoming demoparty that fits neatly into my holiday slot I -will- try to be there. The only thing that could stop me is possible airtravel blight, but since I do not have any solid holiday plans anyway, it might work out the 250-odd euros for a return plane ticket will turn out to be money well spent.

(and yes, even then I should still have a reasonable budget left to spend on booze and a ticket to watch the compos ;))

SICK DUTCH FUCK IN POSSIBLY GOING TO FINLAND SHOCK! (update 2):

According to current 'plans' I can arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa on August 5th at 22:10, then bus/train/walk my way over to where the real party is at. The return flight will then be at 16:15 the next Sunday, which would be late enough for me to make it to the airport in time, but not too late for me to get stranded halfway between Schiphol and my front door due to train blight. Also, this is the cheapest (*cough* 248.69 euros *cough*) option I could find so far, only looking at direct flights between Schiphol and Helsinki-Vantaa. I think I'll make up my mind and actually buy the tickets sometime next week.

(PS you are right in thinking 'just say sod it and GO, where's your sense of adventure?' etc, but I'd like to have a reasonably relaxed experience since it IS going to be my holiday ;))

(PPS not even thinking about surviving Finland booze/food/sleep-wise just yet, first I'd like to sort out how to get there)

(PPSS also, the heat from the past few days might have gotten to me so please excuse me for typing an awful lot of text)

SICK DUTCH FUCK IN MORE LIKELY GOING TO FINLAND SHOCK! (update 3):

Oh it appears I could also arrive on August 4th at 15:20, which would mean not having to miss out on roughly 12 hours of partying on Thursday. Only downside then is finding a reasonably safe place to sleep until the party starts.

(yes I am spamming this topic to hell, but to make up for it I won't release anything that has Dutch colour scheme, ok? ;)*)

(* - at least not THIS year :D)

SICK DUTCH FUCK IN VERY LIKELY GOING TO FINLAND SHOCK! (update 4):

Actually, the 249 euros roundtrip seems to be quite flexible, so I might even choose to arrive a couple of days earlier and make it a proper holiday/demoparty/sightseeing event.

(now the spamming of this thread is due to pure excitement and anticipation ;))

who cares ...
First batch of seminars up including Navis, Visy, Saku Lehtinen (Remedy, Maturefurk) and other cool speakers. More to come and we've got space for 1-2 speakers more. Interested? Ping me at abyss at assembly dot org

Abyss, will there be any way (either during or afterwards) to watch the seminars for people who can't make it to Finland?

One of the competition machines will have a high end (native DX11, PS5.0 supporting) ATI Radeon display adapter, and the other is equipped with a high end nVidia GeForce. Your production MUST work on both computers

The nvidia card is not specified, so is it allowed to require SM5.0 or not?
added on the 2010-07-19 13:09:42 by Psycho Psycho
Looks like the "native DX11, PS5.0 supporting" was just a clarification of "high end".

And most last years seminars were (or still are, dunno) available on the interwebs, hasn't probably changed.

for people wanting something to do before/after asm while visiting helsinki:
my exhibition The Black Flag Hoisted opens 27.7. at tm-gallery, in the center of Helsinki. Exhibition will be open until 15.8.
Tue to Fri 11 am to 5 pm, Sat 11 am to 4 pm, Sun 12 am to 4 pm
The exhibition will consist of paintings, mainly done between 2008 and 2010.

Also, if there's enough interest I might guide people from bzm area to the exhibition some day during bzm. But, it's also possible that i wake up in some different city/country/car etc so I make no promises...

Also, the summer exhibition of the Artists society of Helsinki is open at galleria rantakasarmi until 8.8.
Galleria Rantakasarmi is nicely located in Suomenlinna, just next to the Panimo restaurant and the place where the ferry drops you from. So, it's easy to visit it while going to suomenlinna to have a few beers or more. There's more than 100 different artists participating, I have couple of photographic works there on display.

Trixter, there will be streaming and we'll *try* to make video files. The truth is that is we got only some of them done because everybody's totally exhausted after the party. Typical hit rate is about 25%-50% of the sessions.

Here are some on Vimeo.

Jussi, thanks for the link -- I have enjoyed 5 asm talks so far!

And the full seminar list is up. Pretty kick ass if I say myself:
- convinced Smash to divulge Fairlight's rendering secrets
- got The Pirate Bay co-founder and EFF chairman to do a joint session. Should be really cool for free culture discussion
- smashing sessions from Supersole and Mr. Doob
- funky stuff like robot building (the folks behind the robot wars events in ASM) and the demoscene documentary making of.

And speaking of the demoscene documentary, ASM is the proud host for the world premier of the Future Crew part of the series. It's shown after the opening ceremony on Thursday 5th at 18:30.

Like we all know, Finnish is the lingua franca of the scene (well, at least was =)), so you'll need to brush up on your "perkele!" to enjoy this one as it is Finnish and there are no subtitles yet. AFAIK the demoscenedoc folks will post it eventually somewhere online for crowdsourced subtitles. Now, if somebody were to have waaaay too much time to subtitle a 20 minute doc in less than 24 hours, I guess you could potentially get in touch with the demoscenedoc folks and see what can be done.

I really wish a couple of finns would man up and subtitle the 20 minute doc. I'm really looking forward to seeing / understanding it. :)
