Do you like GBA stuff?

category: general [glöplog]
GP32 is a cool device, but it'll never have the great community the GBA does. I hardly think homophobic comments illustrate anything for or against the GBA Mr Inopia. There are alot of cool GBA prods out there, thanks to the support it has gotten from alot of SNES, Amiga, etc people.

inopia said it all!!

GBA has gotten most "support" from tons of these 24/7 gamer kidz, from whom it has taken a great part of life which could be spent doing something more valuable, e.g. reading or learning something. That's something GP-32 cannot be accused of, or at least not outside Korea and not to this extent.

Any technical argument is absolutely irrelevant, since... well, they're just sufficently different. It's like comparing apples to pears. My choice would be rather GP-32, in part because overclockable/ higher rez/ alternative, but well, it's just my choice.

GP32 has a nicer scene than GBA. Or well, it's kinda like the GBA dev scene used to be in the beginning. Right now the GP32 scene is being flooded with kids who buy it for the emulators. Time to switch to something new.

pokemon mini anyone?

PM dev will be fun. I tried to do a core + emu today... but then I worked in 20 minutes and removed the folder because i got bored with it ;)
btw, inopia, what do you feel is the GBA Scene? The warez/release groups like Rising Sun and Mode 7, or gbadev.org and #gbadev? (or both? :P)
Gba scene = GBA dev scene. Wich means tons of kiddies who recently bought a flashlinker are now asking questions on how to code C++.
That's not a bat thing per se, it's just that they're all STUPID.

Inopia is right
I hope lik-sang doesnt start making

OMFG! ARM9?? GP32 rulz!!!!!!!!!!!! i love mobile computers. i think i will buy one to code for.

It's the hardware that makes the Gameboy Advance so interesting. You can't really compare GP32 and GBA just by looking at the specs. The hardware features of the GBA suchs as blending/rotating/scaling and the tile modes make up for the lack of cycles. Making good use of those features gets the most out of the GBA, hackish tricks have never been so much fun imo.The only drawback is that there's very little memory avaible, efficient use of internal working ram requires planning. I agree with Inopia that there are plenty of kids with flashlinkers who ask nothing but stupid questions, but there are also a few good coders who are very serieus with what they're doing.

What ravity just said ;)
i havent checket gp32 sp muchbut i love my gba though ;D~~

if ravity is speaking the truth, how come i only see dull and crappy gba-demos?

ravity for president!

ravity, that's really wise what you said, I have to admit. But I always thought a little part of the scene spirit was to experment with underrated, exotic hardware and program "challenging" demos, means even for platforms which aren't that easy to program for? I'm just wondering why the demo scene won't acept the GP32 the way it is.

kusma: i happen to have seen a really good looking GBA demo. Hmm... when was it? I think on BP 2003. Then freeze pointed out some complete GBA 3D engine and thought "Oh! This demo looks like it might have used it!"

A part of my scepticism about GBA is that hardware features give stuff you need to make games with some practical benefits (ie lower power consumption), but takes away some flexibility you would get with some more CPU cycles and some assembly sweating. So i'd say GP-32 is interesting on its very own, especially when making non-standard stuff. I'd say it makes it more interesting to the scene. Extra RAM is an advantage on its own right, one could make a "compiler" which would write optimized sprite blitters, like Allegro does.

In particular, i heard GBA offers no hardware 3D rasterization assistence. (Well, GP-32 offers nothing but at least a fast CPU) Have to check the docs on GBA someday when i have time. However, if sprite hardware is very fast, one could bring in some dense particles or oldskool 3d out of "balls". :>

freeze: weren't you the one telling that GP-32 is not that "challenging" at all?
added on the 2004-06-01 19:59:07 by eye eye
kusma: because you're a newskool kiddie, that's why ;) I'm no coder, but I sugest you try making something on a GBA, as you are one.

eye: Nope. I know nuthin'!! Get a GP32 finally. ;]

what's wrong with kids trying to code for GBA? it's way better than the counterstrikekids on PC that don't even try to produce anything theirselves. GBA is an inspiring machine if it gets ppl interested in making stuff theirselves.

as we say in gävle opinions are like assholes everyone has one though some are more hairy than others.

shifter: i was making generalizations!!!1 But nah.. I have my SX1, and it'll be my demo-bitch for this summer ;)

...of course one would be an idiot or a liar to claim that Pholam is crap, but the gba-"scene" imho is in a horrible state. The reason seems to be the lack of talented coders. Way too many people out there do crap like shadebobs and "wow-sprite-gallore"-shit. Demos are about impressing people, and shadebobs isn't impressive. Not even if you do them on a refrigirator or whatever.

That's right Kusma, we demand satisfaction.
*Slaps Shifter in the face with a leather glove..*
I'm challenging you to a duel!
You're all full of shit!

No really, It's quite right. There's lots of crap availbel on the GBA (not more or less compared to the PC-scene though). And even more people talking crap about it.

Right. In my opinion both scenes need some more "blockbuster" applications, such as demos, homebrewn games and whatever.
