Great demo! The zip at scene.org appears to be broken. Search for 'hex appeal' at www.hornet.org, these ones unzips fine.

appeal.zip is the non-bugfixed version. Is there a cds_hex.zip around with a working appeal.exe inside?

no. CRC error.

i just uploaded a fixed version to scene.org/incoming, please wait till they move it...

oops, looks like i only had the original release (without the bugfix).
so basicly it's the same as this
and it looks like hex appeal saves it's settings at the end of the exe...

I have both versions on my HD - the original (1,188,635 bytes) and the "fixed" (1,170,352 bytes). I ran both of them in DosBox and I couldn't tell the difference between them, other than the fixed one kept the datestamp at 10/26/93 and the original one updated the exe date to present. In both versions, I couldn't get the checkbox off PC Speaker on the config screen, but it made clicking noises so maybe it was working.

I just read the DOC, which says that they changed one of the textures on the TV cube which was a Boris Vallejo pic.. but sure enough, the dragon appears in both versions. So now I'm not 100% sure what I have is the "fixed" one.

Is it possible to get the EXE out of that zip even with the bad CRC? Like some kind of zipfix?

Oh, and I'm guessing the one that didn't change the date didn't because I changed the EXE name. So now I'm gonna guess that the EXE in that cds_hex.zip is just the original EXE with 16kb chopped off the end.

phoenix: some unzip programs like 7-zip are less strict when it comes to CRC errors; in contrast to WinRAR for example, it does not delete files after it detected a CRC error. So with 7-zip, you get at least the broken EXE file. Hope that helps.
i just tried the original (1,188,635 bytes) and it works nice in DosBox...
nice memories ;-)

and indead this version "touches" the exe even without pressing the "save" button, which really saves the config at the end of the exe (what a bad idea).

phoenix: i fear the ZIP file on scene.org is really broken. i tried to repair it with WinRAR -> no luck
could you upload the bugfixed version to scene.org?

Yes, Saga Musix is right, extracting with 7-Zip creates a broken EXE.
DosBox shows broken config screen, in opposite to the original version.

The problem is the sound. I tried to capture it, but the sound is crackling in both versions with Soundblaster. I tried different samplerate settings. I can't get it to run with GUS...

Ahem. That is in the original version. The fixed exe runs when I get the settings right, but craps out at some point...

RareWtFailWhale: Just enable GUS in the DosBox config file (dosbox-0.73.conf) and select the port 240 and irq 5 in the config GUI of hex appeal (at least that's what my DosBox uses).

I figured out to click the text buttons, not the checkboxes :), so I can pick Ultrasound, address 240, IRQ 5 (DMA and sample rate didn't work), and it sounded fine. But this is in Dosbox, are you running it on a real DOS PC?

I'm still not convinced the slightly smaller EXE I have is really the bugfixed version. The config screens look identical, even the extra message when you click on "CDS". I'd think they would have changed it at least a little.

Worst case scenario, you can get a good video capture of the demo and insert the audio from libertine.mod. :) There's really no sync so it would make little difference to most people.

Yeah. Might try that, though it's not the same replayer then...
I'm capturing in DOSBox as usual and when I select GUS (I have GUS enabled in DOSBox) the demo runs only till the starfield part and loops there (compo version) or just hangs somewhere (fixed, but corrupted version).
