Agenda Circling Forth - soundtrack discussion

Sad to see that the golden age is far gone. There will never be a new Jogeir or Scorpik.

This generation have learnt from the real music business, steal from tunes which is 20++ old or from ethnic music. If not, then make some lame covers of tunes in the style of trance featuring babes in bikinis.

Zplex: That was a troll, right? Naming Jogeir of all people? The guy who carbon-copied tunes note-by-note from e.g. Hippel?

But this was off-topic anyway. Sorry, go on with the drama.

Let's be honest the rest of the demo soundtracks at BP were the same old stuff we've been hearing for years

Slyspy is/sounds very original, even if his genre is not. Romeo Knight's soundtrack for Brainstorm's demo was also different from what he uses to do... There was even a strangely melodic 4kb in the compo...

break: How dare you to accuse Jogeir for doing that? I have never heard about that and hence it isn`t true.
added on the 2010-04-09 17:48:00 by Zplex Zplex
it is true and he only copied them not4note in Protreker because he didn't have the RAM to simply sample the entire track :) hurray for modern RAM capacity \o/

Zplex: are you ignorant or just stupid? most of Jogeir's tunes are "remixes", many of his tunes are based on music by Oldfield or scene music. He almost never credited anyone for that. You can ask anyone who has a clue for confirmation.

Get Reed back, he copied his own tunes :P

i am back. these days i just recycle my vocal samples.

reed samples reed sampling timbaland sampling whoever originally made the lyrics (forgot the name).
I believe Timbaland in this perticular case only stole the lyrics, not the actual vocals. One can argue it was a shoot-out to the orgininal, wasn't it for the fact that it was Timbaland doing this.

He referenced Eric B.

Also the new Timbaland song with Justin Timberlake owns. He's comparing having sex to eating a value meal!

smash: Thanks for handling this issue in a calm and nice way. Obviously getting permission from the holders of the original tracks rights would be the preferred solution, in addition to adding credits to the .nfo or something.

To me in this case also the main issue is crediting. However, unlike other incidents in the past, I also do not think that your entry had an unfair advantage due to you not crediting that third-party sources were used. The vast majority of the demos content are original, and the technical breakthrough has been on the visual side. I do not think that the current situation is comparable with VIP2 (to a far greater extend carried by the music) nor Suicide Barbie (percentage of really original content rather low).

Saga Musix: I have no problem by that Mike Oldfield have influenced people by his music, it`s not stealing. Who havent been influenced by other people?

Zplex, I wouldn't call ripping melodies "influencing".
Zplex: Jogeir has ripped/remixed numerous tunes from scene tunes, games, movies, tv-shows etc. without crediting the original. That's just how it is. I do love Jogeir though :)

Ok ok, but the point is that he is not the only one.

my 2 cents

scamp : it's not because you have a great music that you will create great demo. The music experience in a demo is probably more than 50% of the feeling but it's not that simple to match the mood of a good track.
For your comparison between the technical achievement of the fantastic demo of fairlight and the Vip2 I can argue that in VIP2 you get 10 differents scenes in 3 min with each time a different FX with constant streaming ( at this time more than 10 years ago we got only 32Mo of RAM

Back then it was quiet a work to finish it in time and like smash we did the nfo in a hurry at party place. The final release contain credit and we never had the opportunity to got the right from fear factory. But seriously a band with a major behind it will ask us several thousand of dollars for limited rights and we didn't have this money.
Remember demo isn't movie making nor an advertisement we earn no money from it. We only got some recognition from people who enjoy it.

zplex: no, the point is, you held Jogeir up to be the guiding light of original scene-music composition. which is laughable and proves that you don't really know what you're talking about.

I'd definitely like to point out that yeah, there still are able scene musicians trying out things freely. But also I have to admit I would be so glad to hear a biiiit more of these guys do a f***ing jazz bigband tryout instead of the saymold (not particularly wanting to hide my proud flag of free experimentation with which I'm in love with). :)

About this case of sampling, the whole demo was such an _awesome_ experience for me all in all it can't help but wash my hands away from feeling any hatred at all. Love, that is.

xrs: hmm... maybe i voiced myself wrong. you've got a point.

let me try that again: its not ok in my book to claim as your own someone else's work. but i feel its acceptable to do sample based work without crediting all of your sources. it just needs to be labelled as such to avoid misunderstandings.

the reason why i have such strong opinion on this issue is about the legalities being thrown at people "in order to protect their IP" that actually stiffles creativity on the derivative work and remix culture front.

ps: this was easy, one source, full song
:D

ah, so you need to sample from multiple sources to be considered creative remix artist. :P thats what i was missing. :P

actually i hadnt read what had happened in the prod comments before reading this thread. most of what i said was already mentioned.

and its a shame 1in10 got in flamewar with other musician folks. both sides have good points behind them. this is purely misscomunication and thin lines of where the remix crediting should be. obviously some care alot more then others ;)
