A demo is nothing more than a glorified screen saver... DISCUSS!
category: general [glöplog]
It's funny how anyone who questions the existence of a 'demo world' is automatically a troll for simply having an opinion or opening up a debate. You guys amuse me.
However, let's be honest : only in the demo world would a person be willing to sacrifice months of working to the best of their ability for every hour available in a day in exchange for no monetary gain.

Independent musicians. People who build model ships out of matchsticks. Graduate students. Amateur sportsmen. Mother Theresa. Shall I go on?
sorry but you don't know what you are talking about mister 1 glop:
1) "sacrifice months": nobody sacrifices months in demo development, how did you come up with this figure?
2) no monetary gain: some parties have pretty good prizes (2-3k euros, ok it's not going to change your life but still it is better than nothing). Plus you may get a cup, a statue, a medal, some hardware... something to look at and feel a bit proud of yourself and your team. There are plenty of benefits from having a demo portfolio if you are looking for a job in the field too. The demoscene is basically driving my own personal career forward and I know this is true for a lot of us out there.
Of-course there are other benefits too: you get to travel around Europe (or further) to socialize, to engage in interesting discussion about 100 things *on top of* the demoscene. You get to work in a group with amazing people that are your friends in creation, not just some guys you have to put up with and work to make money for the boss.
I think it beats making screensavers for a living any day.

Goddamn, people are now seriously discussing with this tool?
Well, the figure I came up with (months for demo development) came from watching amateur demo programmers in action. Not one of them was done with a project in less than a few months... some even went as far as a year to develop a single demo. If that figure has changed since then then I am happy for everyone.
If the demo portfolio helps in obtaining a job then I am again happy. I just hope that the sentence 'won first prize at [insert gathering here]' actually holds weight during the selection process.
As for 'discussing with the troll,' not everyone is a grumpy old fart like you are okkie and they are willing to debate the existence of something that is still relatively underground with someone who is simply looking to get opinions from the demo world. If you don't want to debate at all, you are free to simply disregard the existence of this thread and welcome to not contribute.

I called you a tool, not a troll.
You're a tool.
You're a tool.
Also, you think everything people do is for about money, which makes you an even larger tool and probably American.
Actually, I'm Canadian. However, I'm quite sure that whilst you are quite eager to call me a tool over a forum like this, you'd probably be a lot more reluctant to do it face-to-face if you met me. Either way, you've probably been beaten by your parents and others numerous times throughout your life so raising that point is unnecessary at this point.
Haha, you're Canadian! Sorry man, didn't know that!

while this made me chuckle a bit, i do wholeheartedly feel it is about time to add my opinion to this discussion with a retarded panamerican tool:
:-)
Have I mentioned most of us owe our great jobs to what we do in the Demoscene? So if you ask me, it certainly pays off way more than it would have paid if it was purely commercial.
triple fart
I second rowley birkin's opinion
mind your eyes and noses
*pffffffft ...*pfffffft
*pffffffft ...*pfffffft
See, this is a lot better. If you owe your great jobs to what you do in the demo scene then you are suggesting that there already IS some sort of link between the demo scene and the job market. Therefore, why not exploit that further and encourage the job market to participate in some way in the demo scene... as a sponsor perhaps?
I wanted to write a whole post to discuss this but then I realized okkie already said all that needs to be said.
Once again, very impressed by the collective immaturity and resistance to change.
Once again, very impressed by your inability to fuck off when nobody wants you here.

As the title states, a demo in its current form holds no more importance to the world of computers than a common screensaver does and is often erroneously seen as something more than a useless program that preserves your screen's immaculate state.
they are indeed useless - like most creative things you could call art.
thank fuck for useless art. it'd be a sad world without it.

bwahahahahahahahahaha.
Now seriously, when Okkie says "no", it's time to quiet down. TOOL!
Wow, smash finally gave a decent answer. At least that makes a little bit of sense.
...can you please leave now ... or make freakin' demo 'bout it
... or a screensaver for that matter
... or a screensaver for that matter
... and make it in Naprola, please!
:D
:D
... or steal it, we don't care either.

Well, it's my hobby, I actually enjoy a lot those months of production, I love it, I'm so happy while I do it. And I always want more. So, either I must be black sheep, the only one who find it a pleasure instead of a a "sacrifice", either you are completely missing the point.
