A few days ago on some russian forum i read an opinion:
And also the reply:
The guys are obviously fags, but they represent mass trends. So, chiptune artists, what do you think? In the eyes of public now you're not some weird computer geeks("ololo razor's keygens are nice"), but totally cool and famous music producers(serious business, etc.). Want to sign a contract with Hyperdub label?

Now chiptune is fashionable among hipsters. 2 years ago only various interested in music freaks knew about it.

You got to be kidding. kolakid, 777minus111, dubmoods, zabutoms, all that SUDDENLY became very popular. really popular, and with shitty nu-rave(dark goggles and terrible leggings) even unbearable

Real hipsters are already done with chiptunes. Ke$ha's TiK ToK is basically a chiptune, so that means it completely jumped the mainstream shark.
And there was a big wave of chiptune inspired music in 2006 (Including the Timbo thing) and I think I saw Jeroen Tel's first 'big' performance (not just for nerds) in like 2005.. so yeah..

Also, the 'chiptune scene' is absolutely terrible.
the hate runs deep, isnt it? :P
in other news, http://www.budapestmicro.org/
yeah, the chiptune trend amongst hipsters is allready over.
it's all indie ambient rock now. like the XX and this will destroy you.
one other thing, i never got the link between chiptunes and hardcore punk. but apperantly a lot of hardcore kids like both. i saw Sabrepulse at the same small festival as Have Heart (a big xstraightxedgex band that quited, it was their last show then.)

But those attempts were so cautious. Now you can hear almost clean chiptune, for example, in dubstep scene (like Joker's Retro Racer). Or fully chiptune sound, like Quarta 330. In various ways their works not even close to old-school tunes, but media thinks it's a fresh new sound. Like this article, which is not about chiptune, but mentions it as an influential genre on modern music.
what SPEED OMA said
its only chiptunes.
beep boop beep.. blip blip blip.. buup.
I feel the same way about techno. Few years ago I was that weird kid who was into techno, now everybody listens to it and the bloody shit is everywhere. It comes out of the freaking speakers in the shopping-malls, for the sake of pete.

overground.
isn't the demoscene pretty sell out too?
goto80: that's what bits tried to do. i think he failed.
I don't think it's the question anyway.
Something is mainstream because it sounds mainstream, because it's cheesy, because it has no soul... there are many nice stuff that are actually known by many people outside as well as there are super underground stuff that sound like pure crap.

This statement is ridiculous. Something is 'mainstream' because a lot of people take enjoyment out of it. Of course there is a lot of dumb ass pop in the mainstream because it's easily digestible, but this no way means everything in the mainstream is soulless.
on a more constructive note - most people would probably consider the demoscene as conservative and cheesy. i believe that saying that chipmusic is trendshitselloutcheese is a similar move. there is a lot happening below the minority of 'successes'.
some good non-demoscene chipmusic i'm enjoying at the moment is little-scale, overthruster, ???, quarta330 and gijs gieskes. some of them are definitely pushing the limits of hard/software more than many demosceners.

I'm not a chiptune artist, I just enjoy listening to them. And I don't care whether hipsters like it now or whatever. Of course it's annoying if there are people claiming that they found this totally "new" and hip chiptune thing. I don't even know if people like that exist... because I don't read hipster music boards or blogs or whatever... But even if such people exist... so what? It's not like clueless people are a novelty. And does it make chiptunes less enjoyable for me? No. I still like them :-)
The real point here is not about it is good or bad though. The thing i'm asking, don't you want to become mainstream producers? The ones, who would influence pop culture with your sound. Or the title of underground artists is more than enough?
more than enough.
