graphics speed: mem vs cpu

category: code [glöplog]

I'm thinking about buying a new video card and I'm wondering which is more important. CPU speed or Mem speed. Lets look at the specs of the 2 cards.

A. cpu = 500mhz
mem = 2000mhz

B. cpu = 875mhz
mem = 1300mhz

Pretend that these 2 cards are the same brand. Which card would you buy?

always these questions, never googled... sigh.

Uhm, by "cpu speed" on a video card, do you mean "shader core speed"?

and what kind of videos do you intend to watch on the video cpu?
Sorry for not googling it first but I thought it would be interesting to get an answer from other sceners point of view.

I wouldn't go so far as to say these two are mutually exclusive or that one is a bottleneck. I'm not a firm believer in benchmarking and I don't think this has been comparatively benchmarked... I could go on saying what I think is better but I don't think we have too much data to back anything up. In other words, you should by an amiga instead-- no wait, twelve amigas instead.

You can't say that in general. How bandwidth limited the cards are varies a lot - even within the same architecture/generation.

Wait a second- you started the RANDOM GIRL WITH HARDWARE THREAD. I'm talking to a freakin' celebrity here, albeit I have varying degrees of liking that thread depending on the day but still-- you're like the pope or something.

Well anyway I've got a plan. I'm going to benchmark my card at its stock setting. Then I'll "down clock" my cards cpu by 50mhz, benchmark, go back to stock then do the same for the memory speed. Why didn't I think of this before? I blame the hangover :S

the most expensive one is the best.

Just name the two cards and we can compare. Both specs could be interesting, but just remember that the core of the GPU could be important too. How many Shaders? How many Bitlanes? What do you want to do?

It's like comparing 2 cars... one has 6 seats, the other the bigger engine.
