demozoo?
category: general [glöplog]
what's up with demozoo.org/.net - it has been down for quite a while now.
yeah i've been wondering the same
while you're at it - BRING BACK THE TWO HEADED SQUIRREL!
and ADA!
last time i spoke to gasman he was working on a social networking site for spiders
hehe :)
At least there's no need to surf two headed squirrel at web.archive.org anymore.
hollowman: great news. i already feared that it will never come back again
Erk, sorry about that. Back up now... the server it's on has been moved / rebooted quite a lot lately, and the web server setup for demozoo is a bit weird so I have to start it up by hand.
(I'm happy to know that people are still getting value from it, and feeling quite bad for not getting it back on the rails and doing more interesting stuff with it, but as always with this sort of free-time project, it's battling with a million other things to be at the top of the 'love' scale :-( )

gasman, how is spidermate going?
i'm curious to know what your love scale look like
503 *bump*
*cough* hello.
Yep, it's down at the moment... a rewrite is (slowly) in the works. Current plan is to get zxdemo.org up and running again, using the demozoo database as a backend, and build things up from there - that way it can be something useful right away, rather than duplicating Pouet for the forseeable future. Hoping to have something to show by March, but this may be somewhat optimistic. (Anyone want to donate €50k so that I can work on this full time? ;-) )
Really must put up a holding page saying this...

make an iphone app!
erhm. why rewrite the system if it works? or atleast, why take it down whlie rewriting?
it sort of makes me not want to support the site

it would be cool to see demozoo back - it would also be cool to have pouet 2.0 with possibility to add individual credits, too...
anyway, here's a demozoo logo to give you some motivation :)

Well, that's the thing - it doesn't really work, which is why I keep having to kick the server to start it up again :-) I figured that it wasn't worth spending the time keeping it limping along on the old codebase (and giving the impression that it was being more actively supported than it really was), but I could be wrong on that. Perhaps bringing it back up and posting a news item to explain the situation is a better idea...
As for the rewrite, I'm rebuilding it in Django rather than Rails this time - yes, yes, you may now accuse me of being obsessed by shiny new overhyped technologies. Rails was working fine up to a point, until you want to do something vaguely complicated and end up having to fight against how Rails wants you to do things, and fixing the situation involves arguing with fuckwits on the development team who use the phrase "opinionated programming" as shorthand for "fuck you, our framework is awesome and you're doing it wrong". Either way, most of the work was in the data model, so this isn't as big a deal as it sounds.
dipswitch: woo, thanks!
haha, im normally just using plain php and perhaps javascript at the client end
rasmus: stuck in 2002?
you need at least AJAX, PSV and FEYENOORD technology!
or atleast an imeasurable ammount of patience to deal with all the clueless user feedback.
or a spell checker!
he, at leas t he had the amount of m's right.
mmm good point :)
