It's actually very interesting to see that most of my mates at university (I study CS, so...) don't have a clue what the demoscene is, but most of them have played kkrieger. That makes explaining what the demoscene is a bit easier, though. :)

bits demos - created the whole YMCA scene including rainbows and guys wearing cowboy suits.
sumotori dreams - the blue dudes inspired Cameron to do Avatar.
hugi - popular magazine of many dictators and child molestors, e.g. Fritzl, Hitler, Chavez, Magic, Michael Jackson, etc.
variform - kewlers disbanded and formed the musicgroup imatran voima and gained mild popularity in the finnish dance scene.
deities - the reason hoffman invented lsd, cos his computer couldnt run it.
elevated - inspired god to create mountains, lakes and snow, regardless which religion you favour.
candytron - this 64k meant the start-off of the entire soft erotic industry with movies like Emanuelle.
beyond - screenshots got used by NASA to pretend they went to the moon in 1969, addict2 is still hidden in a locker at area51.

don't forget Frameranger from Fairlight^ CNCD ^ Orange. It happens frequently that i have to explain the demoscene to the comics creators scene (like i do). Seeing cars and robot, they make the link quicker.

the "general public" like reality tv, twittering and Guitar Hero. i'm pretty glad they don't like the scene. having said that.. State of the Art was aired quite a few times on Euro MTV back in the 90s.

xernobyl: Probably not yet! But, as any of these trackers are awesome tools for music production, they all rule inside and outside of our scene. ;)

I would definitely say that specifically FastTracker 2 has had quite an impact on the non-mainstream music scene between the mid-90:ies and the beginning of the 2000:s. I know quite a few musicians that have used it to create music without having a clue of the cultural background of the program. Of course, there are plenty of demoscene musicians (that have used trackers) that have spilled over into music scenes unrelated to the demoscene but I'm talking about musicians that never were a part of the demoscene.

Now that there are things like VST there's no need for musicians to use trackers but before VST came along trackers like FT2 filled the void nicely :) (at least for people not willing/able to pay for ProTools and the likes).

MPT is missing in that list. :P At least it had a similar impact as FT2 as soon as Windows became popular... Dunno if the early versions can be considered a "demoscene prod" since I don't know if Olivier was interested in the scene in anyway, but nowadays, it's being developed by a scener (*cough* at least I call myself a scener).
