just don't understand why not play contributions (and sound admin playlists) at top quality and a volume level that makes it enjoyable to hear the stuff musicians have spent hours/weeks mixing to perfection?

I can (maybe) understand "bass boost", but not mid-hi boost, that's just ear torture.

The system was attenuated (not boosted) in the higher mid-range on the master bus, and most contributions got extra attenuation (channel eq) as I saw fit during the presentations.
Also, the PA was never strained in any way. The signal did not clip at any stage I controlled. Not out from the computers, not on the channel strip, not on the master out and certainly not from the amps (which were running at about 60% load at the highest).

I can guarantee you that I did my utmost to make every track sound favorably when played on the system, as I do at every party I run sound on. But in most cases, musicians in the demoscene are not used to/skilled enough to make a mix sound good on a PA. That's the simple truth. There were notable exceptions at the party (Xerxes' and Irvin's contributions in the dance music compo), and they sounded just as brilliant on the PA as they do on my monitors or my headphones. For these tracks I didn't even have to adjust the channel eq at all (it ran flat).

When it comes to respect for musicians, I have still not encountered any musician complaining that I played their entry too loud. I doubt that will ever happen, to be honest. For most of the musicians I know, getting your track played loud to an audience is one of the most exciting things there is, and the pay off for all the hard work you are referring to.

So to sum up:
Within my capabilities, I've done everything I can to make to every contribution sound as good as possible.

I have aimed to play at a level that is enjoyable to most party attendants. Judging by the feedback I received at the party and here, I believe I have been close to reaching that goal. To try to cater for those who thought the sound level was to high/went to sleep early, we gave out free earplugs. Those people who wanted an even louder sound level are probably better off being protected against their own wishes :)

In closing, I'd like to say that I value your, and everyone else's, feedback on both this subject and other aspects of the party. We will take all feedback into consideration when planning Kindergarden 2010.

lug00ber: You did a great job at kindergarden. It was loud, but the free earplugs was a great initiative and an example to follow for future parties.
I hope you repeat this success at solskogen next year with the same equipment.

BTW, this is an excellent tool at an amazing price, and you should buy one.

skrebbel: gargaj always looks stressed, no matter what, in my experience :-)

it's not stress though, more like very intense concentration - but more on this later :)

the best c64 arpeggio is one played with a massive outdoor stage PA - if you haven't experienced it you should!

lugobeer: I do appriciate the volume in the compos, but to be honest, when we are running the demoshow, people are still working on their productions and speaking to friends. Maybe in this case the demoshow shouldn't have the highest priority and we could lower the volume some..

but I agree it never got too high, but running at that maximum tolerable volume for hours and hours can be pretty sickening.

Btw, if somebody took care of my jacket (silver work jacket, fristads I think) with a höganäs branded cap in the left pocket I would be most satisfied. It were located on the chair to the right of where I was sitting I think.

tbh, i did spend as much time as possible outside the main hall because of the sound volume. i have no problem with volume as such (i even slept right behind the PA while the dnb show was happening), but it was nearly impossible to have a conversation inside the place, which is a bit of a shame.

In addition to thec's jacket, I also have a greyish sweater and a pair of black trackpants. Also a triangular-shaped metal container of some sort, with something that looks like an IDE connector on one side. Some Amiga 500/600-harddrive-thingy perhaps?

I will take some pictures and make a post on kindergarden.untergrund.net after work today.
