Astonishing 3D mandelbrot renderings

category: general [glöplog]
Prediction: the realtime 3D mandelbulb will be the phong torus of 2010

IQ: thanks for the maths, by the way :) I tried to think about some optimization during the weekend but my intuition oversimplified the problem.
IQ: wow, can't wait till that stuff is done animated! :) there must really be some awesome regions to explore and for artists to play it.

can somebody make an animated gif for now? :D

i think the 3D julias done by Keops some years ago looked less scary. those mandelbrots really freak me out, HR Giger style!

So I'm not the only thinking that.

The HR Giger part.

Oh well, they were done in 1999 *and* in Java, enough reasons to explain the coder colors back then.

And maybe it was right after I read a dutch book about painting ;)

The Giger comment was quite fitting indeed. I instantly got a flashback of the beginning of "Alien 1" where the alien spaceship was being expedited, and I guess it wouldn't get very far off if the sets were replaced by portions of the 3D mandelbulb (perhaps rendered with slightly slimier materials than usual).

hempest : wow, nice find! :)

what if you threw in some 'holy music', say arvo part.. while moving across that section. (i'm getting demo ideas here, how odd..)

are you taking the "Exterior distance estimation" for the distance field described on Wikipedia or something else? i would be very interested in a distance field because you don't have to do the iteration thing at all if you have a good distance field -> faster and less branches -> realtime on gpu :D

Yes, it's a distance field, and I'm using the regular distance estimation G/|G'| (derived from expanding G(c+epsilon) with a order 1 Taylor series), where G=the Hubbard-Douady potential, G=(1/2^n)·log|z|. That means G'=(1/2^n)·|dz|/|z|, so distance = |z|·log|z|/|dz| My deduction is somehow wrong I think, but not sure why, because we are all using the 1/2 factor in front of that expression, I think Wikipedia has it too.

So to make it short, yes, I use the distance estimation so I have my distance field for raymarching \o/ What reminds me I should add some reflections!!!!

The Hubbard-Douady what now? Anyhow: [more] pics or didn't happen!! :D

prove that it happened: video

Contrast seems to be fucked up - I'm going nuts with this crappy monitor of this laptop and gamma curves and brightness and temperature and crap. I'm suffering it since two years :(

OF COURSE, I didn't check the post with the "preview" button, why would I...

Correct video link

looks great, what's the realtime fps tho?
iq: that's stunning!

Looking good! Though I'd rather call it Mandelblob or Mandelbroccoli ;)

Stunning. How far can it be zoomed in?
