That's what we can observe nowadays in a digital versions.
In fact, personally, I did prefer to have (BIG) BOXed editions. Released by the true company itself, and not but those dedicated digital-to-physical sites.

That said, cloud based software and the browser as an OS sucks quite hard imo.

We can thank Fairlight et al for the push to digital distribution and vendor lock-in IMHO. Not that I rabidly against piracy or anything but that is the industry response to it. Some software got cheaper perhaps but some licenses are mad expensive.
