I need to be fit. Any suggestions?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Hallo!

I need to be fit. What should I do?
Where is that Wade article again?
Will it work?

This is serious business. My health is bad. And I like food.

I am between megalols and megasucks right now.

I started gaining a little bit of weight when my wife discovered the Rave diet. Here is a link to the book. http://www.amazon.com/RAVE-Diet-Lifestyle-3rd/dp/0972659064/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257339893&sr=8-1

I never exercise and I lost about 15lbs and I feel great.

If you're serious, I'm more than happy to help out and offer advice. It's one of my big passions.

The article I wrote a while ago is probably not a good idea unless you're thin because it focuses on gaining mass rather than losing weight/getting fit.

The most important thing to realise is that unhealthy eating is actually an addiction. High sugar and carb foods cause insulin spikes which give you a short kick and lift your mood, but when they leave you system they make you feel low, which causes you to crave more.

The first and hardest step is to break the addiction. While you have this stuff in your body, you will keep craving it, but once you cut down on it, the cravings ease off and it gets easier and easier. It's very similar to quitting smoking.

The psychological battle is the most important. You have to try and "trick" your mind into disliking unhealthy food and drink. Tell yourself you don't like it, think about it in disgusting ways, or imagine your arterties getting clogged, your teeth rotting away or your belly expanding every time you take a bite of these things. Sounds harsh, but it worked for me, both with food and cigarettes.

The bad news is that you won't see any quick results and that can be disheartening. It feels like you're making lots of sacrifices and working hard and getting nothing back. But then a month or two goes by and suddenly it all starts paying off.

Just take it slow. You don't have to give up everything you like all in one go, but just try to eat less of it week by week. Same with exercise. Just a bit here and there is better than none at all and is a step in the right direction.

Obvious but rarely followed advice: eat less. The reason for getting overweight is really simple, you're eating more than you need. If you continue eating like now but exercise, chances are you won't lose any weight.

I think for eating, it's just a case of getting some balance.. try to go super healthy, and chances are you'll start hating lettuce and give up. Eat plenty of healthy stuff, but still eat a kebab now and then. Just not every day. And eat smaller portions... if you eat less than you need, you'll start loosing weight. If you're hungry between meals, that means it's working :) If you're too hungry between meals, eat some fruit.

Exercise is important too.. if you exercise enough, you'll feel generally better all the time, sleep better, have better concentration etc. Best bet is to find a friend to do it with, maybe go running (which will kill you the first 3 times, but then it does get better, and it's great for general fitness) or biking. The important part is to go fairly regularly (2-3 times a week is good, every day isn't necessary) and push yourself (aim to feel really fucked when you're finished).

The first few times you exercise, you'll get zero reward and plenty of pain (expect your muscles to hurt for 2 days :) but after that, you'll get very little pain and a good high afterwards as reward.

second psonice (i recommend to eat fruit through the day only though, in the evening try to eat vegetable only, it's because your body can't remove sugars through the night), it works great. in the past i exercised a lot, i felt great. i leaved it and i noticed i was often tired and even angry. i restarted my exercising sessions in fitness with my friend and i'm feeling good again...

...and so they lived happily until their death.

I started running a bit in the summer holidays and the beginning of the semester, but kind of lost it now.

What worked for me was the urge to improve myself - luckily I didn't lose THAT, I just redirected it towards other aspects of my life. The wonderful thing about running is that over a very short period of time, you are going to see results, even if you just run short streaks for 15-20 minutes every day.
Keep pushing yourself - the beginning is the hardest, and your body will be tense, but eventually you will begin to enjoy challenging it and start benefitting from and increased mental capacity due to increased blood flow in your brain.

If your body is really tense, go get a massage. I know you are a big bread and you are probably not totally comfortable about your body as it is, but do not let that hold you back. Just find an equally sweaty big hairy dude to do the job.

And finally, don't worry too much about yourself, everybody here knows that you are a fine likeable guy. I bet you have some things in your life that you aren't handling as well as you wish you should right now, but you got to realize that you can't fix that in a flash. You can, however, like I do, enjoy the trip and the little successes that start accumulating over the months :)

Read some books too! I think Haruki Murakami wrote a book about running, I'm sure it's available in a bookstore or on a torrent side near you.

try to eat less processed foods, get more fiber helps you feel full quicker (green leafy stuffs or fruit, bread ect.).

Try not to eat fast food every day (once a week is good but even less is better)

Beer can make you over weight too. along with the other moot stuff.

Ride a bike for about an hour a day. (a real bike not a stationary, or maybe a hooker... Yeah a hooker.)

Hobbes that you can start at a moments notice are good, if you are hungry after you just ate. But eat at least 2 or 3 times a day. Keep some crackers handy near your desk or some sort of grainy high fiber food.
(not cookies or anything with icing.)

The thing about a diet is you have to stick with it or you will yoyo back. Also don't completely starve your self by not eating at all fat people can starve to death too form malnutrition and Still be fat.

If you are taking a pill for some medical problem read the side effects for "Weight Gain" if it has this ask for an alternative without this side effect.
(Allot of adhd medication can make people overweight, and adhd is a common diagnoses.)

This all worked for me.

It really just comes down to:
Eat better.
Find good alternatives to stuff.
Be more active.
stick with it.

I'm quite addicted to running, and for me this high is actually very high. Sweet sweet endorphins.
