Searching for a european company that has know-how in building 3D models

category: general [glöplog]

Hello, here at my job, we work for a european project, but we search for a company that is nor french nor british (because a french company and a british one are already involved, any other euro country would fit), that would be able to produce 3D models of real buildings (possibly some interesting monuments), for geo-localization-thinggy.

Any interesting informations about companies that produce 3D models would be interesting. Thx !

What's with the "already have french & brit companies, need another one"? Some sort of EU funding scam?

or perhaps an attempt to steer the project into a linguistic plight

supah: yeah ! Exactly what we search. The project manager of my company will surely contact maila-push soon. For information, the project should deal with augmented reallity and tourism.

First, I speak from experience (a couple of eu projects in homeland security with huge 3d cities and orthographics textures, 3d walkthru in historical relevant 3d virtual environment - Rome, etc), and some others in different "research" areas.

In my experience european projects suck a lot, they are only made so companies get founding free, results don't matter, it's all about spreading money "equally" over different regions and research is inexistent or irrelevant. If the european projects where serious they would pick _the best_ companies in the related fields, and select them based on their capabilities and not in their geographical location. Otherwise it's a joke, and in fact, sadly, I have the impression eu projects are about giving money in a "fair" way to companies in different countries, not about research and implementation of technology. Not sure they are doing the right thing with the affirmative action/positive discrimination policy.

Now, having said that, there are always exceptions. So good luck

Bingo, that's it ! But not in rome as far as I know.
Not surprising, everybody is always doing the same things at the same moment. I guess it's because pda has gpus now and there are AR opensource libs around. And minds are formated the same also.

As a simple developper, I have no experience in european project, but what you say would fit to 99% of the jobs people are doing nowadays (computer science or not). I mean, Who would *really* need a phone with augmented reality to visit ancient ruins ? Breathe a bit: no one ! It can be done "well" or not, all these new technology stuffs are useless bullshits made to bring money. The need doesn't exist. And the role of governmental (or related) institute is to feed companies with public money. I mean, I worked a lot for the army doing stupid expensive simulators, that were clearly useless but gave work to a lot of people. The whole economy is maintaned by public money and states, not industry. To face the truth, the legend that makes you believe you will succeed if you work hard is a lie, because no one really need the products people are working for.

krabob: just because the shoe fits YOU, doesn't mean the rest of us work on pointless projects.

i've never understood this university fetish for failed virtual / augmented reality projects. i've seen loads of weird (eu) projects producing irrelevant result. the project usually lack vision and are overhauled by large commercial companies with state of the art research departments.

i believe that the universities should stick to theory and leave the practical implementation to the commercial institutes (since university = brains, software companies = resources).

oh well, that didn't really have anything to do with the topic.

will this be another second life application? :)
it will be a european doomsday device, or "the cube".

krabob, good point, but it doesn't apply everywhere, quite the contrary.

f.ex. i'm quite sure that the hip threedee researchy work my friend dr.mo/limp ninja does at philips medical really does help surgeons do better operations, in the end.
