imdb - space odyssey is a must see movie. dont let its age fool you, it ran in the cinemas back in 1968. It's a masterpiece.
What I mean is, my impression of the movie is that it was ultimately about humans encountering something that's completely and utterly incomprehensible to us. And they never even made any attempt to explain it. It just gets weirder and weirder until the final "what the fuck" in the very last scene. To a modern person, everything in the real world is pretty much comprehensible at least at a very basic level. This is one of the few works of fiction that escapes even that aspect of reality. That's what I think makes it a classic. It would almost be a shame if everything were explained rationally in the book.
