I think he tried to hit the covered up pool, but missed because the ladder moved when he tried to thrust forward.. don't think he's dead though, as it seems he landed on his left side, not on his head...

I wonder in what kind of danger he'd be in if he hit the pool. It would suck to get tangled up in the cover in the water
