Ok, this is scary.

As some of you might remember, a few months ago this gem landed in my email inbox:

Shortly after that I got a series of weird emails telling me passwords for something I clearly had no idea about (AES keys, OpenOffice documents). Reading the horrible English I shrugged it off as new kind of Chinese spam and moved the mails into the respective folder which made my client autodelete them after some time.

Tonight though, when I came home from work, I opened my snail mail inbox and found a small package from Ireland (!) containing an encrypted USB stick.

Well, of course I hadn't got the passwords anymore so I've got no idea what was on it before I formatted it (at least I've got a new encrypted 4GB stick now \o/)...

... but still, WTF with a VERY BIG F.

Has anything like that happened to any of you? And well, the bulk of the evidence points to the certain mad frenchman mentioned in the topic, so any hints on his whereabouts or RL info would at this point of time really be appreciated (scene.org guys perhaps?).

This reminds me of the plot in an cyberpunkish short story. It involved conspiracies and other cool things. A shame you hadn't got those passwords. Who know what kind of porn that stick contained.

I like how you just formatted the stick instead of trying to figure out what was on it. You were part of an ARG and didn't even know it :D

okkie, the stick had a 256 bit AES encryption and I remember seeing emails about RAR and ODF passwords, so I figured my h4x0ring skills would't suffice anyway.

I don't think the idiom is so common in english in any case the "XXX demystified" phrase is kind of common in french.

i bet that the usb stick, you just formatted, contained the only copy of an environment safe replacement for fossil based fuel. shame on you kb!

kb: As long as you just formatted it, and didn't put new files on, there is really no big issue rescuing the files on it.. unless the key itself has built-in encryption of course.. though, it might just work then as well. GetDataBack is my suggestion.
