Unforseen problem with 50mbps connection

category: general [glöplog]
Me and my friends have run into a "luxury problem" of sorts. We have all indulged in scene released movies (and to be fair, the random piratebay "release" aswell). We have seen _a lot_ (read: thousands) of movies.

The problem we start having is because we have seen so many films it starts to get quite cumbersome to sort out among us what has been seen and what is still unseen.

We've taken to randomly just download "something" which translates to "wading through waist-deep shit in search for gold".

We are probably not the first to have this problem and im opening a topic to find out how others might have tackled this situation? How do we continue to find quality films once we've been through all the classics and their spawn?

We thought of constructing a database of what weve seen that links us to movies of directors whos films we might like, but it doesnt sound like a very elegant solution.

imdb.com?
yes,imdb.com will probably be part of the solution, the question remains tho: how you gonna try and sort away the shit? i might love Ridley Scotts "Alien" but i could care less for "Black Hawk down".

feels a little off-topic for pouet. (a serious post that has nothing to do with the demoscene, posted by someone who has nothing to do with the demoscene either.)

well, i believe this will be a more widespread concern in the future as decent connections get more widespread. I see pouet as a gathering post for the kind of people who have travelled these worlds for some time tho and might be the ones who can give some insight in the subject

So 50mbps is considered something so bragworthy a bbs-topic is in place? What is this, America?

i my self didnt see it as brag, although i can see why some trolls would like to make it look that way. fact of the matter is - it leads to problems in data oragnization which is the topic id like the bbs to be about, but if you wanna have a flamefest go ahead

Just watch Tommy Wisau's "The Room" over and over and over and over again. You'll never need another film.

Here is a clip to demonstrate its awesomeness:

wWales: sorry but in this case you are the troll honey. Also seriously, warez scene sucks. No matter how much it benefits us, one should never justify its shitty nature to a degree where one can open a fucking BBS topic to brag about his connection speed and how he has illegally downloaded 50% of the random shit on the Intertubes.

my internet connection is 512 kbps.
216 has leading.

But seriously i do have a similar problem with books and dvd's... I've managed a few times to buy a book or dvd that i already owned and didn't remember about. That sucks even more.

Ah yes, nothing beats being called a troll by a warez-kiddie who created his Pouet-login on the 2009-06-09 at 18:13:25. Good'ol internet.

i honestly just wanted to have a discussion about organizing a database of cultural content, something i thought was atleast somewhat demoscene related.

weve seen some territorial markings in this thread, and to those responsible for it, i appreciate your concerns; you dont want your arena for discussion to be clogged up by wildly offtopic subjects. But i have to raise the question: If it really was that unrelated to the scene, why not just ignore the topic and let the natural order of things have it dwindle down into oblivion?

Why this focus on the bandwith? it was not the focus on my topic! It was merely a way of providing a context to let you understand what volumes of movies we are talking about here. So im totally lost on this "bragging" track this has taken.

Allow me to rephrase:

I've seen alot of movies.
It's starting to get to be so many i have a hard time to keep track of it.

Demosceners have seen alot of demos.
It's starting to become hard to find the next Debris among all the BITS

What personal approaches do you use to find a good demo these days?

Ive seen you use the thumbs and pigs to get some ratings going on, but what inherent problems do you see in this system of ranking, and what do you do when youve "seen em all"?
