I saw a thread asking what tools people used recently. But was a little dissapointed it was all about coding for nuschool demos.

Also I prefer uncrippled freeware tools, and would rather pay a voluntary donation than purchase some bloated boxed shit.

So what freeware software do you use for code, graphics and audio? Here's myne.

PC
-notepad, but I don't really code on PC, maybe the odd *.BAT. Yeah, it's proprietary. But kinda free
-erm... nothing that's not proprietary.

Amiga
-AmiBlitz (well I use Blitz2.1, but AmiBlitz is the currently supported version).
-GfxCon. PersonalPaint.
-AudioMasterIV. MusicLine. OctaMED

they're just the one's I use the most. The full list would be to long for me to be arsed typing.

I know few (if any) of those are strictly freeware, but they're all readily avalable without having to find a torrent or some shit and live in fear of the feds busting you for pirate software.

I find GoldWave(PC) is great for all my batch audio processing needs, like converting wav to 8svx(amiga). But it's a piece of crippleware which to I have had to impliment a lame crack (*.BAT file modifies ini., windows registry, then runs app).

can anyone recommend a better one for PC? better=smaller and not crippled, to me.

Needless to say all the Windows(tm) apps I named are crap, (limited functionality, innaccurate, unintuitive interfaces, etc.) but necessary. And all the ClassicAmiga apps are intuitive but again offer limited functionality due to limited CPU and chipset.

And of course. Before anyone else says it. It's is always worth a browse if you've got time.

Notepad isn't freeware.

Visual Studio Express is completely free. It may seem like overkill for the job but I use it for my oldschool projects because I know the editor and, well, because I still need to write convertors and tools occasionally. Of course, I use it for my newschool stuff too

There's a free version of Paint Shop Pro that I use too. It's pretty good for pixel work

If I need anything more powerful (Photoshop, Maya) I just use my work PC ;)

Blender for 3d modelling/rigging/uv mapping etc is crude in some aspects but does the job done, not worth spending money on such software when this stuff is only a hobby..
Coding: eclipse, gcc, g++ (since eclipse runs on both win32/mac/linux)
I can't stand the GIMP so I use photoshop on windows 7 and under wine.

yeah I settled on PS 7 too. It has the functions I need and Photoshop was already convoluted enough by that point.

Notepad2 (for windows) is great and freeware.

GoldWave is great. And it's shareware, not "crippleware". The licence costs 59 Canadian Dollar which is currently less than 38 Euro. Well worth it IMO.

Anyway, on the freeware side of things, I like PSPad editor, ModPlug Tracker, evaldraw, IrfanView.

Visual Studio Express 2008 for coding and doing some simple video editing. VirtualDubMod for video encoding, GoldWave for wav to mp3 conversion, MilkyTracker for hammering my girlfriend's hears.

Amiga: Asmpro,Protracker,AHX,Future composer,Personal Paint
Mac: Houdini apprentice

It's just more or less wordplay, but few if any of the tools mentioned here so far fall under the _freeware_ definition.

Decipher: for me photoshop is not just a hobby. But I don't do 3d modelling professionally so that particular craft is a hobby :) I agree, it is ironic indeed.

I guess the last time I used a proprietary tool for demomaking was in the 1990s when i used Borland Turbo C and a386.

i use mspaint, visual studio express, irfan view, audacity, gnu rocket, etc.
