Are you a psychonaut?

The best trip you can make is the one you take trying to find your way back home from where you find yourself after regaining consciousness from a 5 year binge of indiscriminate drug and alcohol abuse. In this state, truth is the only thing you can trust - usually, that truth is yourself, but not so much when it has been pummelled beyond recognition. Of course there is also the nightmare of waking up in a hellish prison of puppet prison guards, mandatory sunglasses which filter out light more than ~30cm away, and all sorts of other network of association based forms of uniformicatory control. I know it isn't a word. I am also not being too serious ;)
(but slightly more on topic, many of Visualice's and mfx's prods are pretty good in this respect,

i think the weed aspect was lampooned pretty well in Lucy in the sky with Deities, since the demo essentially only really gets going after the protagonist creature smokes a pipe and its eyes turn bloodshot

Who of you has had experiences with substances that Ernst Jünger classifies as "mexican" - which boils down to any 5-HT2A partial or full receptor agonist such as: LSD, Psilocybin, DMT, Mescaline, Morning Glory seeds and Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds (I believe the list is not complete)?

I always thought demos were a substitute for drugs. Like, you can see the northern lights without doing illegal shit.

Though I can hardly imagine someone high on LSD screaming "that could be done in Amiga without EOS!"

I've never understood the point of drugs, booze or cigarettes. As far as I can tell people only do it because they are sheep. All booze tastes horrible, so do cigarettes. Why not have more chocolates instead? And drugs (xtc, weed) only have a minor effect that I could do better on my own by getting exited about sex or sport or a really awesome demo.

And all these things are so bloody expensive, thats the biggest turn off for me. I'd rather buy something I've always wanted.

I also think another big reason people do it, is because of the huge pressure to always "be cool" nowadays. The only time people will forgive themselves for being childish and stupid is when they can pretend that the booze made them do it. But it didnt. You are all just as immature as you are when drunk, its still you. So why not just accept this, then you dont need to blow so much money just to be yourself?

I've never seen it as a popularity contest, more of a means of self-exploration and experimenting with the limits of perception and the way my brain works and translates information from the senses. I've always been a very synesthetic person, and those (highly pleasurable) sensations are usually heightened with the use of psychoactive chemicals.

spitfire: the be cool pressure to doing any kind of self-medication is a naive approach, only applyable to teens in their pubes. no veteran caffeine junkie, cigarette chainsmoker or drunkard will consider the activity "cool" or making them be percieved as cool by others. most of them realize its a dumb activity, but at the same time it's felt as required to survive the hardships of a fucked up life. stressful work hours, fast paced workflow, overly demanding responsibilites, you name it. we live in the most demanding society ever, its only normal that drug use has blown over the roof. whatever you can consider to be a drug (chocolate is also a drug), i place them in the same level as eating disorders, self-mutilation and other similar depression / stress induced irresponsible / self-destructive behavior.
we dont do it couz its cool, we do it couz its a fucked up world and we cant quite cope with it as we should. there is a pulsating need to be allowed not to cope with it all, even if just for a few hours in your life. breaking the cycle.

sure there are other ways to expunge it from the system: creative artistic catarsis, sports, violent videogames, sex. but somehow they are all attached to another degree of addiction, responsibility and control.

I'm in no way interested in harming myself, that's for sure. Then again, we are talking about substances with very minimal research of the long-term effects, or even short-term effects. Everybody has a different brain chemistry, so all psychoactive substances have unique properties that greatly vary from person to person. I guess it's just a risk I'm willing to take.

ps I meant you are supposed to be cool/successful when not on drugs (i.e. at all times), and taking them allows you to relegate responsibility for your uncool behavior.

'self imposed low social skills' is an interesting concept, I might be doing that to myself too.
