pigman: na, I just let breakin compile since he runs windows. we code together using different os. the OS part almost never comes into play, but nvidia vs ati does ALL THE TIME. and I blame ATI. (I run nvidia on linux and breakin ati windows.)

hey, I'm on openbsd right now. I usually just say "linux" because most people recognize that. If I say I run bsd I just get more questions, the differences between any unixy os is so negligible it doesn't so much matter for me. so yeah, I'm on linux *wink* *wink*

Operating systems are a totally overrated topic. Especially for demos, for which they are just a stupid abstraction layers making things more complicated.
I personally use Unix(-like) systems for nearly everything because those are what I'm most familiar with. However, if I released PC demos, I would definitely release win32 executables because that's the compatible format in the X86 world (even under Linux/FreeBSD, win32 prods are generally less painful to run than native binaries that tend to require a specific combination of specific versions of external dependencies).

just, the dependency hell doesn't make it possible to release a demo without the source so that people can recompile (i guess that's the point of that platform though..)..

in some cases, faking the .so by making a symbolic link to it still work.

While I agree with you on this being an overrated topic, but I do think it goes without saying that without the ease of setting something up on for ex. Windows and the luxury SDKs, we wouldn't have as much demos as we do today. Lot of problems solved for you. Of course this becomes less of an issue when your target machine is a simplistic piece of retro technology..

The dependency hell is more like a result of GNU/Linux being FOSS, which results in many different distributions with many different versions of installed libraries.
Imagine having 20 versions from different manufacturers of WXP alone, each having 20 or so SP. Now try to create a demo that runs on all of them.
OS X is Unix based, and I would wager that a trendy hipster Mac user gets laid more than a regular Windows guy.

Xlib, OSS/ALSA etc. Not some high-level wrapper library that is designed to make your source code more portable. SDL is NOT DirectX for Linux.
That being said, if SDL is installed by default by modern distros, I'm not opposed to people using it (any more). It just feels ridiculous to have to install multiple megabytes of non-standard libraries to watch a 4k intro.
