Blueberry, I know nothing about crinkler's internal so I'm curious. Is an universal unpacker doable?
The whole discussion is actually one of the reasons I don't really have any love for the 4kb competition on PCs. It really is stretching the limits of what OS writers are willing to support and accept..

Your point is mute anyway, since you most likely can't run the unpackaged versions either, seeing as Windows 2000 has about the same amount of hardware and software support as a Tomra-machine (which actually runs Windows 2000, the last time I checked :)

You seem to imply that demos are typically more demanding of the hardware than 4k intros. Quite the contrary, I would say. As an illustration, consider that there are by now at least a dozen 4k intros doing pixel shader raytracing, but I have yet to see a single demo based on such a technique.
... not to mention that the first demoscene production to use DirectX 10 was a 4k.

In principle it should be, yes. It would be a bit of work, in particular since it needs to build a complete, "normal" header including import tables. The next version of Crinkler will include a recompression feature which will give some of the benefits of full decompression.

Well, this is the whole reason we are having this dsicussion: So we can decide together which operating systems should be supported rather than leaving it up to the individual 4k intro makers. You should be happy. :)

Plenty of demos use tracing. They might not be "based on such a technique", but that's the nature of a true multicoloured demo :)
Once in a while it's necessary to remind everyone about the fact that it's totally OK to put good realtime effects (optimized for speed, not exe-size) in a 40 MB demo. Some of us still do it from time to time, believe it or not.

to be on topic, i'd say there is no need to support an OS that does not support modern gpus (from what i've read above, this looks like the case at hand). At least my feeling about PC demos (small and large alike) is that a big part of their attraction comes from the use of new hardware. If I feel nostalgic, there's more suitable platforms than win2000 :)
agree with hyde 100%. windows prods are about exploiting latest tools and hardware. i doubt anyone producing prods for < winxp today is really on the appropriat platform. perhaps they should be doing a1200 demos instead.

I switched to win7 yesterday, so i'm eager to see what mentor and blueberry will deliver :)

It'd be interesting to write something that works only on, say Windows ME, just because you can :)
