Ahh, orbital mind control. They can certainly tailor your search results then- when they control what you search for.

But seriously folks. It might be an interesting project. I'm probably not going to pay attention to it much though. Not until they have something I can run
added on the 2009-07-08 21:03:35 by sigflup sigflup
From reading (very briefly) their press release, it sounds like they're going to release linux with a minimal window manager and the chrome browser. Then expect you to run everything as a web app.

I have a better idea: Run normal linux and the chrome browser. It'll take 10 seconds longer to boot the first time you turn it on, then it'll run the same stuff that chrome os does plus a ton more.

Seriously, am I missing something here or are they just re-releasing linux but with a ton of stuff missing?
added on the 2009-07-08 21:12:27 by psonice psonice
I think they are making their own GUI, not based on x11/gtk/qt/etc.

And very short boot time was also mentioned somewhere iirc.

I guess the plan is to make the OS as minimal as possible and not callign it linux so casual users won't get scared.

and then control your minds!

yea, cause, you know, what we really need is a fast javascript engine that runs a Java VM, which runs an x86 emulator, which runs a damn small linux with a minimal window manager and chrome.

oh, wait..

what about discarding all those stupid unnecessary drives and booting straight from tha google servers?
--> PROFIT!! (and mind control!)

if it really has a very short boot time, this might be interesting for the cases when you just need to look up this one thing or browse and your harddisk w/o anything else. as a secondary OS oc, and it should be able to be installed easyer then the chrome browser ;)
there is nothing else like this that i know of, cept for Phoenix HyperSpace. But for some reason it costs $40 A YEAR, why?

also, those donuts are too small
neoneye: yeah, they also said that the apps on it would be web based. That would imply that the window manager is.. the chrome browser! I.e. they can get rid of the desktop altogether and just boot into the browser.

Shorter boot times? yes, because it's only loading enough to launch a browser.

If that's what they're doing, it'll be great for a few cases where that's all you need, but it'll suck utterly as a demo platform. Unless you're gasman :)

Oh, and what's the big deal about short boot times? Does anyone actually shut down their computer all the time? Or has windows still got terrible suspend issues? Does linux suspend properly? (I've only used desktop linux on somewhat obscure platforms or in a VM recently, so I'll take my bad experiences as being unrepresentative :)

i want that, after the BIOS has booted, it takes no more then 5 secs to launch the OS, the browser, and (if its seperate) the explorer!
no logging in or such
also shutting down should be instant
whynot: just use sleep/suspend/whatever it's called on your OS. Close the lid or hit the sleep button, walk away. Come back later, open lid, you're back up and running in a couple of seconds (or after typing your password if you're being all secure).

not a very economic nor ecologic solution ;)
and not really practical or even posible in my computer-usage.

could also be helpfull for laptops. an OS like this with very low CPU usage uses way less baterypower, right?
suspend/sleep uses pretty minimal power i think. At least for my laptop, it sleeps for a week pretty easily on battery. I'm pretty certain it takes less power than it would use booting up from cold anyway, as I'm generally using it at least twice a day.

Why wouldn't it be possible/practical though?

i sometimes lack sockets, so i have to unplug the pc, got some pc's in places where i bearly come. and my main computer is next to my bed, and i don't like the buzzing. all sorts of stuff.

playing the devil's advocat though, i prolly won't get it anyways :p
The chrome os is aimed at netbooks initially though, and sleep mode pretty much kills the boot time advantage there. On a desktop, it's more of an advantage yeah. Btw, it shouldn't buzz when it's asleep, it should look + sound pretty much powered off.

Another issue I see with chrome: it's intended to run web apps instead of native stuff. Web apps are slow compared to native stuff. And it's aimed at netbooks, with their nice slow CPUs, not a good combination. But they're suggesting that speed is one of the goals of the OS.. how come?
