What is a hacker anyways?

category: general [glöplog]
syphus: hacking into stuff with things like a portscanner and a handy exploit is trivial compared to using only AOL and smilies. Trinity is lame.

You forgot to mention that Trinity has a dedicated amiga demogroup!

Help! I think I need a Venn diagram to understand this :PPP

I found the link to that joke article here. The comments from Rob "Flack" O'Hara are awesome.

Observation: “I know only of few movies that are only about hacking, the first movie that introduced the
public to hacking and showed that such things were possible, in the movie the main character David Lightman is a
hacker, and usually hacks into his school.s database to change his grades, he hears about a new computer game by a
company called .Protovision. and decides to hack into their system to steal the game, so he finds their number and
hacks in and gets a list of Games, he thinks he hacked into Protovision, but actually he had hacked into a Military.s
Nuclear Combat Simulator Computer, known as WOPR, which was made by a scientist, its basic purpose was to
play games and learn from mistakes to create an unbeatable strategy. One of the games on the list was called
.Global Thermo Nuclear War, and Lightman decides to play that, when choosing sides between United States and
U.S.S.R he chooses Russia, the game starts and he chooses his first attack to be none other than Las Vegas, I can.t
belive he chose Las Vegas, I LIVE HERE, well I wasn.t really around back then so doesn.t matter, anyways for his
second target he chooses Seattle, where he is living in the movie.:

(In his quest to write quite possibly the world’s longest run on sentence, the author neglected to mention the name of the freakin’ movie.)

Hahahahahaha!!!

At first
where there were no hacking going on, a Hacker was some one who knew a lot about computers, even if you
couldn.t hack into people.s computers but you knew how to install programs, install windows, operate multi OSes,
you were a Hacker.

Hahahahaha!!! Like there were windows during those times :)

since when are you listening and respond to someone?
youre just talking

I break nobody's nerves because you can just skip this thread.

haha yeah dude what about stop posting on pouet?
wasnt it you who promised 10 times not to spam here anymore and then coming back just to keep doing what seems to be the only thing you can do properly.
Do you have a job? No? why dont you improve your coding skills and try to do something out of your wasted time?
Perhaps worth to think about it.

Ah fuck it. I am gonna obfurscate my pouet password and forget about it. You are right. 10 times and till the same thing. I am bored of that thing and don't know what to do. I am bored of your reactions too though. The same arguing. Pouet has no moderation, I have the impulse to write things (because I feel like I am allowed and because 10 other non-scene boring threads are opened at the same time) and then the drama. I am going to obfuscrate my password now, I also since two months and after ten years I lost my motivation for coding demos anymore so I won't need to login and post something I did anyways.

Goodbye Pouet.

You can get the boy out of pouet, but you can't get pouet out of the boy. ;)

He'll be back sooner rather than later.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(computing)

Quote:
In computing, a hacker is a person in one of several distinct (but not completely disjoint) communities and subcultures:

* People committed to circumvention of computer security. This primarily concerns unauthorized remote computer break-ins via a communication networks such as the Internet (Black hats), but also includes those who debug or fix security problems (White hats), and the morally ambiguous Grey hats.

* A community of enthusiast computer programmers and systems designers, originated in the 1960s around the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s Tech Model Railroad Club (TMRC) and MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. This community is notable for launching the free software movement. The World Wide Web and the Internet itself are also hacker artifacts. The Request for Comments RFC 1392 amplifies this meaning as "[a] person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular."

* The hobbyist home computing community, focusing on hardware in the late 1970s (e.g. the Homebrew Computer Club) and on software (computer games, software cracking, the demoscene) in the 1980s/1990s. The community included Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Bill Gates and created the personal computing industry.

Today, mainstream usage mostly refers to computer criminals, due to the mass media usage of the word since the 1980s. This includes script kiddies, people breaking into computers using programs written by others, with very little knowledge about the way they work. This usage is so much predominant in the general public that a large segment of it is unaware that different meanings also exist. While the use of the word by hobbyist hackers is acknowledged by all three kinds of hackers, and the computer security hackers accept all uses of the word, free software hackers consider the computer intrusion related usage incorrect, and refer to security breakers as "crackers" (analogous to a safecracker).

So, according to Wikipedia, demosceners are hackers, too.

I feel there are several disparate groups trying to claim the work hacker because it's fucking leet. As such it's definition will be discussed until we're all bleeding from our eyeballs.
