Do i need to ask permission to use demovisuals in non commercial event?

category: general [glöplog]
Hello, we're organizing local 4-hour music party, where some scene musicians will play some scene music-sets (own tracks, and with permission from other authors). The party itself is a non commercial event.

Do i need to ask author's permission to show kkaptured demos during party?

if it's a demoparty I don't think you need any, considering throughout the history of the scene there has almost always been a demoshow during a party.

If nothing else, asking for permission would at least be a really nice gesture.

Decipher, no, it isn't a demoparty. It's a music event with live dj performance.

Preacher, thank you! I want to show "Insert Coins" for a pause between two musicsets, it fits perfectly because our party is very oldschoolish :)

probably not in most cases, because it goes along with the typical license agreement for demos ("non-commercial use", "original form", etc). but its always nice to hear from someone doing this just to be polite, and also so the authors know their work is appreciated and getting seen.

diver-4d: Ah I see, in any case feel free to promote us too :). We should have videos for most of our stuff. I hope.

I would not want my material associated with live DJ events. But then, it's hardly suitable anyway.

Doom, ok. We'll not planning to show any of Iris demos.

i've seen some democaptures in veejay sets at places - this was pretty cool imho (*wave* to solenoid).

i don't think there's anything wrong with that. as long as you don't claim the visuals were made by you what's against a public showing? i mean, weren't demos intended to be shown publically?

if you must, ask for permission. but i personally think that any demomaker who'd object to a showing like this is a hypocrite. it's like a amateur moviemaker who'd object to his movies being shown in bars. or a musician who'd object to being on the radio. i can see if people would object to others making money off their work without permission, but i see that that's not the case here.

as such, i'm glad doom stopped making demos ages ago, as this reduces the chance of me, purely by accident, actually showing them to people. we wouldn't want that to happen, now wouldn't we!

what if the DJ makes money (on a regular basis) on his music-sets ? Would sceners agree than ?
Dont the sceners deserve a small percentage of the money the DJ makes ?
