The original rationale for the Finnish censorship law, as I understand it, was to block access to foreign sites that that the Finnish police can't shut down. That sort of makes sense, but keeping the list secret makes no sense at all, and if indeed it's used against only foreign child porn sites as it was meant to, then, what's wrong with accountability? If the powers aren't abused then clearly the police should be able to account for how and why they use them, and moreover they should want to account for it, as few things make the police look more heroic to the public than fighting child abuse.

But unsurprisingly, censorship is abused for political and "moral" purposes as it always fucking has and it always fucking will. So what else is new.

It is interesting and scary to see, that the governments of countries who call themselve »democratic« (like germany, great britain, usa etc.) and are proud of their democratic rights, throw all of them out of the window when it comes to topics like »Terrorism« or »Child Porn«.

Felice: Blocking CP does not help at all. There is no doubt that we all are against CP and if someone would touch my kid, he’d be dead meat! The problem with blocking the content is, it doesn’t keep people from watching it. The sites are still up and there is an easy way around. It’s like having a picture in a galleria with a curtain in front. You only need to peek behind. It would be better to take the picture down.

Problems start somewhere else. It is so obvious that as soon you have established a blocking filter there are so many other sites that could be banned as well. Torrent sites, Fascistic sites, Free speech and the list goes on and on. I probably wouldn’t be against it so bad, if at least a judge would decide if a site is added to the blocking list or not. This is not the case. Only one authority shall maintain the list and that’s the same one who will prosecute you, the police. That is the scary part.

In germany its election soon, thus they will use anything to profile their party/person..

If it really has any effect or is reasoned does not matter aslong as they gain acceptance of the majority..

Well, we seen so much rule systems till now and none seems to work..
imho it's because humans are not as far developted/evolutioned as their culture/technology is :( We're basically still monkeys :(

Keep in mind that the petition only says "we disagree, don't do it", but it is (of course) not binding for the parliament. The most probably outcome will be some politician (apart from the idiotic minister zu Guttenberg who seems to think the petition is only against blocking CP) making a statement like "we also don't like it, but we have to do it."

But we'll see.

But even if that's enough to make a difference, there are much deeper problems when politicians need this kind of persuasion all the time. Yet the best you can hope for is a "oh well, guess this would hurt us too much in the polls, so we'll try something more subtle next time".

They'll probably just do what the UK government did on internet surveillance, and push for an EU resolution that requires all EU countries to comply with equivalent laws. Then it won't be their fault anymore, and as a free bonus they get to dismiss all the calls for a referendum.

Crap it. The Austrians are going bonkers as well.

The funny thing is that there are perfectly good reasons for studying CCTV cameras. Simply being inquisitive and trying to form an opinion on whether or not Big Brother is getting a little too nosy, for example. Or, maybe you want to make sure they're working so there's no conveniently missing footage next time the police execute a random innocent civilian. :P

Heh, and yes, you'd think that watchful eyes poster was satire, wouldn't you. But it's not.
