I think this also applies to the demoscene.

Discuss.

but yeah, it applies in the sense that people can lose perspective.

That's so true!

And Louis C.K. is awesome :)
Who is jason and who is conan? Besides that, the guy being the guest in the show is absolutly right. I wholeheartly agree and besides the mentioned example there are dozens (thousands even) more.

So what is there to discuss? I take it for granted that most sceners are well aware of reality, and therefor not spoiled. I assume they are never bored, because, well this is a DIY culture. So if you're bored, you're doing it wrong and you don't understand the essence of being creative, writing code, doing graphics and making music.

It is like hanging around on pouet all day and thumbing demos down and reading the bbs instead of using your digital fighting skills like a true scene-ninja, who releases a wonderful piece of art out of the blue while no-one has ever heard of them.
Being a self claimed demo critic is easy if you don't do shit.

Ofcourse, one can argue that we are spoiled, thinking it would be impossible to think that a party like BP allmost got cancelled.

Well, for instance take a 4k intro which probably took a whole lot of effort to code in assembly language no less, and some random guy's gonna say it's shit cause the colors are ugly or whatever.
-=skope=-: who cares how much effort was involved if the colors are ugly ?

size coding sucks anyways, IMHO.

(now go, bash me for that statement)

Offtopic as Scamp, but this shit thread deserves it: The 2009 buzzword for Flash is apparently "voxel". I had the principle "explained" to me by a Flash developer and how it was going to be awesome +1 for the web.

...Yeah. Fuck that noise.

hermes: Not gonna bash you, but your statement proves the point. =)
And furthermore, I do not think size coding sucks. If anything it should be applied fucking everywhere so that people wouldn't have to use up 15 gigs for a clean Leopard install. That's fucking insane! 15mb for a demo? I rather watch 64k and less, it strikes me as way more impressive.
-=skope=-: you're talking of your ass right now, sry pal :) the magic word is "3rd party" and if you have ever tried to put together an OS the size of current Linux distros or WinXXX you would understand. but no offense, rly.

I hope you're happy with a progress spinner precalcing/unpacking up to 15 minutes for your Leopard boot of 140Mb. Have a ball while you reassess what the term size coding actually means!

(I am not saying that it can't be done, nor that it should be done, but I'm just being realistic :/)

Sigh...
jej, I know... *sigh*
~140mb should really be enough for a basic OS installation..
and for some "targets" it's more than enough, even today :)

but the future still sucks, in many ways.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/

"Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos."

Apple seems to have realised something anyway...

15GB is a LOT for an OS in my opinion.
Shifter: Way to go with the extremes.
That's the difference between 257 and 256 bytes, you hypocrite!

I hope you realize that snow leopard will not do much about your poor judgement on diskspace required for a neat OS.

Eeeh, what in the -+=FUCK=+- is wrong with you? I'm saying I think size efficient coding should be applied everywhere possible and now I'm a hypocrite? Can't follow your "logic" at all really. You don't think 15 gigs is a bit excessive for a clean install of any OS?
what a disaster
skope: you're the dirtback in the airplane and you don't even realize it :)

It took you 4 post to get from "That's so true!" to
"If anything it should be applied fucking everywhere so that people wouldn't have to use up 15 gigs for a clean Leopard install. That's fucking insane! 15mb for a demo?"

but but, you are surfing the internet in the fucking SKY!

Skope,
I always bite at these things.. But Leopard is not 15gigs installed if you do it clean as you say. Clean means not installing 3-4GB of printer drivers or 2-3 gigs of language files. Also you don't need X11 and you don't need Xcode in a clean install. If you actually install just the drivers and language you need, an install is about half what you claim.

It's still waaaay too large, but still nowhere near those 15GB.

I look forward to Snowy which should mainly be an optmized maintenance release. That's something the software industry as a whole should also do. I mean, anyone loaded Photoshop CS4? What a bloat, and it doesn't do much more than PS6 did.

i hate american talk shows where big guys talk too loud, love hearing themselves speak, laugh at every not funny joke as if it were the best joke ever...

US showbiz is the cancer.
