I second that. I started studying at the university of Ulm, which was near to my home. After "Vordiplom" i switched to Heidelberg, that turned out to be the right decision.
I didn't study computer science, but i work a lot with people who studied Technische Informatik, which seems to be a good choice if you are also interested in hardware and electronics.

to be honest, it was far enough to get more independent ;-)

go to a well respected one which teaches modern stuff. visit the school and talk to people. if there seems to be a nice atmosphere around the campus with interesting people and good teachers, you will have a great time.

sagamusix, when i suggest some place far away you go all emo, when others do it it's all fun and games... also, the c64 jokes i made in the BP thread are a thing between me, knoekie, and a few more dutch ppl, i have no clue why you feel so offended about it... are you smoking hashies or something else that makes you act so fucking paranoid perhaps?! srsly, get a grip dude...

I can't really recall doing anything "optimus-alike" apart from in that thread... which was not really serious anyway (and everything after (and including) "shall i upload a video" was pure irony anyway)... And this thread is not meant to be attention-whoring or optimus-trolling or anything, because this is really important to me.

I spent a few months at MPI-Informatik in Saarbrücken last year. From what I gathered, the CS stuff at the main university is pretty good. The city itself is not that hot (and not much student life there), but people were quite friendly.

Erlangen - seems I'm the only scener here at University - but we have some nice pubs and parties here!

I was in the Mathematics Karlsruhe, but didn't go to the lessons and tried to go to the computer graphics lesson of the Informatiks dep. Was funny because I understood things just by being a tourist. The professor was a bit younger and I thought he might know the demoscene. He knew the amiga demos of the past and he was surprised when I gave him links and that the scene is still alive on PC. Some people told me that the informatiks dep on karlsruhe has many maths which some people can't afford but that could be a rumour.

But maybe that's not relevant to this thread.

the maths thing... that's also what they write on their homepage (karlsruhe)... I'm not the best in maths (11, that would be a B), dunno if that's the right thing for me...

the question is not whether you're good at math, but it's whether you *want* to do math. first find out what you want to do, then search for a uni. i suck at math, but the kind of math that i most needed for my CS education (proofs, integer arithmetic, computational geometry, stuff with rows and sequences) was exactly the part of math i sucked least at, by far. so i got a lot of math, but it was nearly only math that i liked. (i.e. i hate calculus, suck at vector math, etc. that's also why i'm such a crap 3d coder. there was some of that math too, of course, but significantly less).

just making sure: you did think about whether you wanted to study CS at all, right? half my classmates quit after a year (and some only after five) discovering that being "into computers" does not suffice as a reason for enjoying the field of computer science, either academically or professionally.
