windows7 users: how's the compatibility with vista drivers?

category: general [glöplog]
i have an HP lappy with some "vista-only" drivers in the sense that HP just cant be bummed to release XP drivers anymore. but... is windows7 friendly or anal about using drivers intended for vista? any experiences?
Windows 7 just seems to work with everything I've thrown at it so far.

Isn't windows 7 basically a Vista service pack in all but name?

Or has it changed at a more basic level?

I'm using windows 7 and the vista drivers for my canon printer worked fine, so I guess that it's compatible then.

Noone promised a new file system.

The new file system (winFS) was promised for vista, back when vista was promised for 2003 or so. It got abandoned, along with a fair few other big features that would have made vista better. Dunno if it's permanently abandoned, but it's not going to be in win7.

And yeah, win7 is more or less vista SE.

venomsoup: it's "tactles stroll", that's his real name. He is a troll though.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit as a test environment and used Vista 64 drivers when I installed. They all work fine. Aside from a performance hit in sopme 3D games and demos, there isn't much that *doesn't* seem to work with Win 7.

Some things dont work on my end, like MacDrive, and any DVD emulation software (like daemon tools) refuses to work or brings problems. Other than that, it works.

hm no daemon tools is sucky.
movi: that's because they're watching you...you're not allowed to do that on your personal computer. so they just make it "difficult" rather than upsetting you with a "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THIS!! OK?" dialogue box. :}

i'm sticking with XP for as loooooong as I can :P

WinFS is/was no new file system, it's only a database extension for NTFS.

sorry for this smart ass comment...

Why would anyone want this btw, the only thing you need is good handling of metadata, like the one BeOS had. Those were the days...

My understanding was that it's much more than an extension for ntfs. The whole filesystem is supposed to be a database, so instead of doing standard file writes to save a file you'd do a database query and add a line to some table. The OS then interfaces with it in a way that presumably gives you a 'traditional' type view of the disk and files, but with all the extra power of a good database. There's a ton of benefits to it, but I guess there's a ton of downsides that they hit too.

Pity, they could have got rid of the retarded disk letters at long last :)

Don't insult OS/2. It was actually a pretty nice operating system for its time.

I had to wrestle long and hard with the drivers for my M-Audio soundcard to get that working, but it seems to be okay now.
