@Louigi Verona: No.
iq: what do you use here for the depth of field effect ? it looks great
navis: regular two pass gaussian blur, where the kernel radius is modulated by distance. Sometimes (not in this case), I reduce the blur where differences in z are big (to avoid to cross object edges).
What would be the challenge on rendering cubes???

Just lacks a bit of contrast and done, and a 4k all like this :D

I did not mean to buy forever. Can I be declared a temporary owner for 43 seconds? and then you redeclare yourself an owner. It would prove that BBS threads are a movable commodity. ;)

The challenge is to make a interesting and cool 4k out of cubes. Cubes like you have never seen before ;)
iq: Ok, sign me up to your fanclub. Now!
it's not a cube, it's a box
iq is good, but we knew that.
"artists" passing these things off as cool by spending hours and hours on them pulling them out of a renderer's ass though is utterly lame and retarded, which iq pointed out by calling them 'stuck in the 90s' :)

Chanfer cubes you mean? I'm tired of this cubitis infection. But I understand, it's not like I have never done cubes myself. Stop the abstract shit. Because we can do better. Or can't we? I say "Yes we can!"
that obama really ruined that sentence for everyone didnt he?
what's wrong with abstract stuff? i personally like it a lot more than stuff that just ends up at the bottom of the uncanny valley.
winterniels, i find the idea and composition of those pictures iq redid a lot more impressive than the fact that they managed to render them. i really think the originals are quite inspiring. is that part of the job also "lame and retarded" to you?
that said, iq those abstract shit things of yours are really cool :-)

gargaj, i'm fine with abstract stuff as long as is not done "because I could not do anything better". and i mean this in the context of demoscene of course, where we are supposed to challenge ourselves and improve on top of doing something cool. if the cubes are the ideal shape as a way to express something, perfect, i just have the felling we sometimes go for cubes cause it's the easy way. that said, i'm also fan of many minimal intros/demos, even some that have cubes!
outside the demoscene, i also believe that much of the cool work of those artists would be much better if they were not stuck with technology of the 90s. i don't doubt they would use global illumination if they could to make some of their pieces more expressive. that was all.
skrebbel, gloom, thx guys. remember fans do usually invite artists to a beer

ok, i spoke to gargaj. do not take all this too seriously, i just like to troll. I think I have a trauma after Candystall :)
Skrebbel: Second that mate....... Iq, that's some pretty impressive shit. :D
and one more, the "chamfer" cube thing is nothing against Keops. I'm just tired of my pouet logo, that's it.
Don't worry, it's not like your opinion will ever have an impact on the things I like to do during my sparetime :)
haha! Best answer, indeed! Good, Gargaj was making me feel bad for speaking about the cubes like I was speaking about you.
from what i've seen its just some geometry here and there. the way iq does it has a technical edge to it which makes it less obvious and easy to do.
thats just how i feel about it.
thats just how i feel about it.
I was explaining Gargaj on IRC that not everybody was interested in copy-pasting the latest GPU gems ambient occlusion code or copy-pasting the latest Siggraph paper about [insert cool modern technique name that will impression sceners]-rendering.
A lot of people don't care about those things and don't care about that "WTF I DON'T HAVE NO SSAO WITH DOF IN MY DEMO SO I MUST BE A LAMER!!!1" nonsense.
If people want to have fun and create abstract stuff with simple shapes like spheres and cubes, they should keep doing it without being discouraged, especially if it's their way to express their creativity and above all if they have fun doing it.
If you don't, IQ, just do something else, surely the scene is big enough to arbor different tastes and visions :)
