i was listening to some music critics on radio and some quoted Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak as one of the most memorable and characteristic album of the 2000s o_O

personally i could list many fundamental albums of the 90s (placebo, radiohead, air, daft punk, the chemical brothers) but i've actually no slight idea for the 00s... except the comprehensive demoscene works of a certain french artist that keep powering my loudspeakers, but i may be biased a bit ;)

so... your personal pick ?

808s and Heartbreaks is shit, but Kanye is slowly turning himself into 'most characteristic person of the century'. His marketing skills are awesome.

* Everything by Coldplay (eventhough I hate it myself and it's overated as fuck)

meh, this actually spans only the first few years, and people might consider some of these not 'fundamental'. I could put more time in it and give you a more substantial list, but I won't and I'll make breakfast instead.

The only interesting album you mentioned is the avalanches, the rest is just mainstream pop, nothing fundamental about it. IMO of course. Okay, the Daft Punk is essential as well. But the rest, come on...

One shouldn't forget Radiohead - starting from Kid A (2000) to In Rainbows (2007), even if the majority thinks they haven't released a noteworthy album since OK Computer.

Just thinking about the artists alone Britney Spears feels like the best match for describing what the 2000's is about. Or perhaps even Timbaland. :)

Nothing fundamental about N.E.R.D? They were probably the most influential producers of the 00's. And Jay-Z gets props for lifting hiphop to a another level (together with Kanye).

I threw in Muse because I tried to think of something rock related that was influential for the 00's and didn't want to google 'Interpol'. I threw the list toghether in about 5 mins from the top of my head, and then taste and own experience come to play as well. I don't listen to rock so I have to look that up :)

You have a fair point about Royksopp though, they were an interesting one-day-fly, but not very special. :)

It is a sad fact that music in the 00's didn't have that many peaks you remember. Pop seems bland and all other genres are not big enough to reach further.

And there you go, I bet there are a lot of people that have never heard of them. Fundamental doesn't mean 'just good' but also 'changing the sound'.

actually after a deeper listening 808s and Heartbreak isn't that bad, some beats are pretty efficient even infectious :)

timbaland could very be the most representative of this decade :/

But it is often the NERDS and Timbalands that take these sounds from more underground acts. So IMO it's not them changing the sound. They have a good feeling about what is hot and will score hits.

Not necessarily of course, but fundamental would be a term used to describe albums that not only are good (or not even) but changed not just music but culture and lifestyle. Think the rise of metal in the 80s and the start of hiphop. I think that the 00's were actually a good time for folk and singer/songwriters to bloom. The internet gave them a bigger audience and smaller music gets appreciated more.

And now I will stop music-nerding and make food.

mmm it's probably too early to judge the impact of albums released in the last 3 years and specially the last 3 monthes ;)

there's a difference between music that's hmm interesting and music that makes a lasting and significant impact on everybody. the latter is called quality pop music

But there are a lot of folk singers nowadays, this whole new weird folk shit is gaining popularity. And I don't think hit charts are as import as it is now. Just take a look at the last.fm community. So many people listening to non pop music nowadays.
