My apologies

category: general [glöplog]
I've just seen some demos in the top10, and I see some hundreds of thumb ups and a dozen of thumb downs. Then I think: why some people thumb down that high quality prods!?

You know, there's always, somebody to thumb down a good prod, and in the most of the cases without any good reason to do it. By one hand, it doesn't matter at all, by other hand, that kind of down votes hurt my eyes...

Then I've found something... I down voted tube by baze :S So, I was, at one point, asshole enough to do it... I can just apologize about it. Sorry.

why? jealousy perhaps?!

the whole concept of "thumbs" reminds of nazi germany anyways.

Personally I think I've never thumbed a prod down. If it's not great, I just add a regular comment or ignore it. (ok, there are prods that were build to suck but ignoring is close to thumbs down anyway)

nice of you to "apologize", texel :D
(I guess you meant tube by 3sc ?)

...uh, dangerous subject, especially because I`m German, but WHAT (the fuck) has the "concept of thumbs" to do with "Nazi Germany"? o_O

In Nazi Germany one`s got deported for giving his opinion openly.......

And here, you can tell and discuss whatever you want and give your opinion openly to all the productions....

So, I would find an explanation of that therory quite interesting....(and NOT because I`m German, but in general)

About thumpdowns: Luckily I only had to thump down one single production yet, and what seems to be clearly crap (could often be derived from the title or screenshot) I simply don`t watch.

....a shy try by myself: like there is a good production, and everyone is expected to thump up...like all raised their arm and scream "totaler Krieg"...in a metaphoric way.....
...and there is one person who dislikes the production for some reason (e.g. personal taste)...thumping down....metaphoricly not raising his arm and therefore a "SYSTEMFEIND" (=systemenemy...or so...)
...and no one can understand that someone dislikes the best demo ever, and therefore he might get flamed, because of giving his opinion openly and not joining in the chant.
Sounds reasonable, doesn`t it....? Maybe I should think FIRST and ask STUPID questions THEN.... ;O)

according to certain legends, the "thumb" was used to decide whether ppl. were able to continue working in KZ slave labour or were too worn out for that and "thus" needed to be disposed/killed.
(I learnt that in 7th grade)

ok, it's maybe a bit far fetched (and yea I'm german, too) but I'd rather prefer a 1..5 rating system instead of "The Thumb".

difficult topic, I agree, probably shouldn't have mentioned it :/

....ah ok I get it....I wasn`t aware of that....at least the thought could be followed....

...but thinking about it, "The Thump" was also used back in ol`Rome in Circus Maximus by the Emperor to decide between life or death. Same concept and would have been more suitable to bring up as comparison...^^

There are also very underrated demos with few comments that were very hard work too. Somehow the few thumbs down are just a different opinion, so it can be also interresting, if your point of view was you couldn't see the "beauty" of the code, it wasn't that bitching.
There are screenshots thumbs down too and even worse, pouet- pouet :P
.....or thumpdowns only because a prod comes from a certain group, and without having seen the production actually....thats bad, too, I think.
(e.g. if its a "BITS" production.....)

Buckethead, Skyrunner: That's one reason why pouet could really use a more difficile rating system..and "tag clouds" maybe.. :=) ?

I guess there's no "ultimate product" (which is the aim of the "thumb" nowadays if you think about it) as well as there is no definite "scene". pouet should account for that. !

triplepost FTW: (sorry;))

I mean, many of us have grown up in the 80ies with all these nice game magazines for example.. why not give different ratings for music/gfx/code/concept/direction/rarity ?

(ok, skyrunner, you might object that this would be similar to the olympics. .. well, ok more like the special olympics, har har ! :D ok. not funny. but I'm serious.!)

....I agree with the suggestion for a more difficile rating system.....^^

The olympics?
I meant the gladiators fighting to the death an depending on the mercy, the crowd and the emperor might show and stuff back in ol`Rome...^^

the olympic thought "dabei sein ist alles" ("taking part is all" dunno how to translate properly) doesn`t fit there...^^

Why not indeed, things change, I wonder with pouet 2.0.
It's a preference too something more analytic. I remember those magazines, I was not always agree with the rates, and the system doesn't hide the final rate. Whatever system we have you can't get rid off different point of view. You just leave more (interresting) elements to rate.
The actual vote system made pouet too as the freedom of speech. Pouet with famous/unknow demo sceners and people that aren't in the scene, and maybe not coder, musician, gfx etc (or not even swappers in the 80")
(but I liked the rating system too on the magazines)
....I have fond memories of the magazines back in the days of 8bit....(nerd I am...^^)
..."power play" (german magazine) rult, read it from 1990-2000 (until cancelled by the publisher) :o/

Buckethead: That ("freedom of speech") is how I backed up pouet when argueing with other ppl. who have created other, similar but more moderated, sites. I think "F.O.S" is great !
However, I still would like to see the rating system being improved. ;)

Skyrunner: Happy Computer, ASM, Power Play, C64 Magazine, Amiga Magazine, Amiga Special, you name it !

:) I remember Tilt (french magazine) when it was mainly a bunch of screenshots, maybe 40 games by page ^^
We had also a great contest with demos with Generation 4 magazine http://pouet.net/party.php?which=1299&when=1990
Did you got something similar in your country ?
Hermes: yep, this is the charm of pouet ;) also it's simple to use
yep, a friend of mine won the "kickstart" magazine demo compo in '89/'90
but by that time I was far too young to compete myself (that guy was 19 and I was 12/13, I remembered how suprised he was when he met us (dsn and me, we had just released our first sinescrolly/starfield type intros) !)
Cheers!

It was your opinion at the time and that's what matters.

ok, seriously.

I just came home from a good party night, and (let this hereby be a disclaimer) very (and by this i honestly mean VERY) drunk.

Still, skimming this thread and failing to decode the horrible abominations of the English language that at least make me feel less bad about my own suckiness at aforementioned mode of expression, I feel that this thread is essentially about nothing and you managed to introduce a Godwin as the fucking FIRST response.

The whole thing just remembers me of a message I found on the Intarwebs the other day..

Quote:
Knock it off, all of you.
Seriously, what the hell
