What soundcard?

category: general [glöplog]
iblis: I know, I know.. this what I noticed. My stereo sounded not that good for the money I spent unless a friend came and gave me a new cinch cable.. and it sounded MUCH better..
But now.. if I bought a new good cable from pc to stereo, it'd cost as much as my current soundcard.. :-)
So, still any suggestions..?

phred, go digital as the funny little man said. Only prob i have had with digital monitors were that the ones i tried was infrared. And that caused a small latency. Nothing to worry about, but enough to get a trained musician go out of his mind.

Besides as far as i see it, when youre in the gaming range soundcards, wich i reckon most sceners are. The soundquality is roughly the same in them all. Some have a few added bells and whistles, but at the end of the day, for our need they are fine.
You have to go into the 3-4000 euro kind of cards before a difference can be heard with other than testing equipment. And then again, a lot of other factors comes into play... so lets take it from the start where any good deal is made.

What are your needs?

I hope you got your currency wrong, iblis. 3000/4000€ for a soundcard sounds like a little steep.

Myself, I recommend RME soundcards in the pro/semi-pro range http://www.rme-audio.com/)

great audio quality, flawless operation, and supports many OSes

I agree (still rather pleased with my RME Digi 96/8 PAD), but don't tell plek.

These aren't cards you'd like to use for your run-of-the-mill directsound escapades -you'll always need some cheapo soundcard for that. :\

Why not some antique EWS64L/XL or Turtlbeach Multisound Pinnacle? They have a wonderful, full and rich sound. Better than game AC97. Even EWS64S is better. You need a free ISA slot though - i have the cards but don't have the slots in any of the computers i could actually work with.

However, sound from GUS and AWE32 and all are no that clean. You're better off with AC97 for sound, though there are other reasons to have them. And i do as well.

So far, older Live!s serve me well.

Possibly, but apart from the fact that I don't have ISA slots in my current computers, I personally happen to like the irony of a soundcard that has analog in/out as a *luxury* supplement and not the other way around ;)
