last year i said to myself: you have to do a textmode yourself next time...now i´m running under vista...maybe i´ll reinstall some xp extra for that soon,haha...otherwise i´m into 3 projects already anyway...

but all thumbs up for continuing it :) hope there´ll be another one next year aswell :)
there won't be if there's no demo! now stop your lame excuses and do one :)
i'm sure you can do texmode under vista, why not?

Maybe it's time for Alpha Design to do a comeback...
added on the 2008-11-11 16:57:47 by britelite britelite
hmm,i couldnt even watch the invit, cause it kept saying sth alike "This System doesn´t support Fullscreen" !
now its running tho, lol! i just thought m$ changed the DOS-Mode to unusable for TMDemos...pretty new to Vista u know!

and i havent said i wont do anything, just that i´m projectwise working like mad already...so it still could be i take some days off to do a TM...just not as much time as i would like to have to do it then!

:)

now i´ll finally watch the invit :) Textmode rulez!
haha! glad to hear that!
and britelite: sure it's time for Alpha Design to make a comeback :) I mean, ND won't be in the way anymore so someone else could actualy win.
And yeah about the prizes, I still have to bug Guybrush for the complete list but we'll have copies of Guild War (thx to blackpawn), and of the Dark Domains DVD. And the diplomas. And most importantly: all the fame textmode can bring!

I like a lot Alpha Desings desing so keep your style the same!

Yes, this is the year that we get heavy corporate-style games as prizes.
so far we will have:
3 copies of the Guild War anthology battle chest thing that has everything
and 3 semi-randomly selected pc/xbox games from the MS co store, although if someone is really nuts I could get them a MS golf shirt instead :D
and of course Dark Domain DVDs and the _infamous_ TMDC Diploma

I vote for renaming TMDC to LRDCWRFC.

textmode rules, tmdc sucks.

216: why don't you make a demo about it? :D
added on the 2008-11-12 04:42:21 by GbND GbND
"LRDCWRFC"?

I should have started but I haven't. Except if I do.

trixter: probably 'Low Rez Device Context With Restricted Fucking Colors' or something.

Some people make TM demos that are just their software engine (not a trivial thing to write, damnit!) thumping out 80x50 frames and then displayed with libCaCa.

Ooptimus: use buz's template : D no energy barrier.

close. i was after "ridiculously fast cpu" though

You do realize that this is the first time I have the possibility of actually competing in TMDC? =)

(we'll see if I have the time / resources to do so, however)

While I played around with my opengl textmode proof of concept (available in source form from my web site) I also looked into libcaca. When I used libcaca before, I wasn't all that interested in what it does, as long as it looked good enough. Consider the fact that the TMDC invitations by me were all done in a rush - I think the last one was done in like 6 hours.. =)
Anyway, I was surprised how bad the character selection is. It doesn't even try to do any ascii fitting, the characters are just a "grayscale ramp", and only a few characters are used. It still does a surprisingly good job considering this.. and I believe it should be possible to do much better.

sol: can't wait to see your stuff!
It would be really nice to see someone go beyond the CACA thing that's for sure!
caca is good for blurs, but for a sharp thing (like the invite :P ) some other way of rendering could be way better.
as an example, 8088 Curruption has a quite better bitmap->textmode convertion, but it's not wrapped in a nice free lib suited for real-time rendering and 80x50 output.

Sol I thought you figured out this stuff long ago, after all my tmdc9 demo used OpenGL ES as was suggested on tmdc website ;)
There were a few people going beyond libcaca, buy being constantly overtaken by ND who are using libcaca, shows that time is better spend on other things than textmode mapping.
libcacas HSV space matching is okish, bet the charset is terrible, simply changing it so something more linear and not going over 50% density could make a world of difference.

@BarZoule: The method 8088 Corruption uses is 99% exhaustive -- it's seconds per frame, not frames per second :-) Although if you're willing to burn 16! (136 colors) * 254(chars to process) * 4*4*3(resampled tile) * 16*4 (size of max pointers for btree per block) = 106119168 bytes for lookup information, it would indeed be realtime. That assumes 8x8 font... if typical VGA 8x16, you can quadruple that ;-)

So yeah, there's a reason 8088 corruption encoder source is not a nice lib ;)

BarZoule : how about a PMDC ? ;)

@paulius: unfortunately, since nvidia bought hybrid graphics, the hybrid's opengl es renderer hasn't been publicly available anymore. I also know that people have been doing better rgb->textmode converters than libcaca; it was just a rather big surprise to me just how bad libcaca was =)

And anyway, I still think it the best way to go would be not to use generic converters at all.. =)

I'm really hoping to participate, but it's caught me at a really bad time. I have so much going in my life at the moment (drama), and it's honestly draining all motivation. For the same reasons, I doubt I'll be attending Blockparty next year.
On a side note, unless I use some sort of Virtual PC or legacy video driver, I don't think I can get fullscreen under Vista (I hope someone shows me otherwise)

@Nezbie: You don't have to make a prod to attend a party...!
added on the 2008-11-14 01:40:24 by trixter trixter
or attend a party to make a prod =)

Trixter: a 101MB lookup table could be possible with today's fat ram, but it would be smaller to do a lookup for each frames, that is, play back the prerendered movie :P ....or.. maybe you could accelerate the processing with the GPU, with CUDA or something. That'd be so lovely ironic :)

keops: PMDC? Polygon mode? Protected mode? Poutine mode?

Nezbie: Sad to hear about your drama, hope for you it will sort out soon. And like they say, don't have to attend a prod to make a party! :)
